  2. Student work 1. Advisor for Presha Rajbandhari, MPH • Presha completed a Formative Assessment Plan for the community of WaWaBar . I introduced her to Maria Soza-director of Esperanza and had the pleasure of working with Presha through the year. I offered my expertise in women’s health and patient education and nursing education as she compelted her Capstone Project for Johns Hopkins. • Presha traveled to Binghamton University to present her project to a group of Nurse Practitioner Students

  6. Student work, cont. • Presha developed a nice conversation with the women of WaWaBar. I hope that she has an opportunity to travel to Nicaragua. She has great Public Health skills-and I used her as a resource for other student lectures. • We recorded her as she presented the powerpoint and I will use this for lecture content in the class Nurs342-offered in the fall to undergraduate students.

  7. Student work, cont. • Nurs342-Nursing in Complex Humanitarian Emergencies… • I developed this class-with some help from Sera (thank you!) to be offered as an elective to undergraduate students. Ideally, it would attract students from a variety of schools; Social work, Anthropolgy, Women’s Studies…Management? As well as Nursing students-but didn’t this year. Likely, I need to learn the art of advertising electives. • The class was mostly a success-I have ideas for changes. It was approved from an experimental to a regular course offering. So-success!

  8. Nicaragua • I traveled to Puerta Cabezas and WaWa Bar in Nicaragua with members of a group from a local community college; 14 nursing students, another CNMs, 1NP and another RN faculty. • This group was present at the formation of the women’s shelter and organization de mujeres-also known as Esperanza. The group that I was traveling with offered 1 month’s rent for the shelter-with much picture taking.

  9. Nica, cont… • After this meeting, I spoke with the director of Esperanza; Maria Soza and asked her for a proposal for a project . We spoke at length. A group of 30-40 women, the village pastor and constable have joined to create a safe place for the victims of violence in this community. • The high rates of GBV (gender based violence) and VAW (violence against women) in Nicaragua are well documented (see Presha’s capstone project for excellent references). • I am hopeful that this might provide a possible student placement as well as offer respite to this group of women.

Nica, cont • Possible project goals: • Safety for victims of GBV of WaWaBar • Improved health-mental and physical for the women of WaWaBar • Improved financial independence-through sales of sewing projects • Microfinancing of project variable costs • Student placement-Nurse practitioner, women’s studies, Biomedical Anthropology
