  1. Notes Chapter 1.1 • Health is the combination of physical, mental/emotional, and social well-being. >>>>Being healthy is striving to be the best you can be at any given time.

  2. Wellness an overall state of well-being, or total health. Example: A person with a balanced life is said to have a high degree of wellness.

  3. Prevention practicing health and safety habits to remain free of disease and injury. Examples: • Wearing seat belts • Applying sun screen • Avoiding unsafe areas.

  4. Health education the providing of accurate health information to help people make healthy choice. >>>Warning labels, ingredients, and safety guidelines are all examples of health education.

  5. Healthy People 2010 is a nationwide health promotion and disease prevention plan designed to serve as a guide for improving the health of all people in the United Sates. • Health literacy refers to a person’s capacity to learn about and understand basic health information and service and use there resources to promote his or her health and wellness.

  6. The Health Continuum • The continuum shows that your health can be measured on a sliding scale, with many degrees of health and wellness. • What three behaviors would help you move toward a positive life style?

  7. Notes Chapter 1.2 Heredity • Refers to all the traits that were biologically passed on to you from your parents. >>>Beyond your physical health, heredity can also influence personality and basic intellectual abilities and talents.

  8. The Health Triangle Social Physical Mental/Emotional How does one effect the other?

  9. Environment • Is the sum of your surroundings >>> including your family, your neighborhood, your school, ect

  10. Peers • Are the people of the same age who share similar interests. >>> Your peers include friends and classmates.

  11. Culture • Refers to the collective beliefs, customs, and behaviors of a group >>> Examples: ethnic group & community

  12. Media • The various methods of communicating information such as radio, TV, film, and newspapers

  14. Notes: Ch 1.3 Risk behaviors • Are actions that can potentially threaten your health or the health of others. >>>Not wearing seat belts, smoking, or alcohol use.

  15. Cumulative risks • Are the risks that increase in effect with each added risk. >>> Behaviors repeated over time and the negative effects that lead to serious health consequences

  16. Abstinence • Is avoiding harmful behaviors. >>>Not using drugs, tobacco, or alcohol

  17. Type II • What positive effects on others might result from your participation in a campaign that promotes abstinence from substance use?
