The Knowledge Information and Sharing System of the ETH-Domain (KISS)

KISS is a platform that provides easy access to knowledge and information across multiple research institutions within the ETH-Domain. It allows users to search for exploitable knowledge, patents, and researchers' expertise. The system is decentralized, with a centralized database of metadata and links to web pages for detailed information.

  1. The Knowledge Information and Sharing System of the ETH-Domain (KISS) Beat Birkenmeier Dominik Ulmer

  2. ETHZ - Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich PSI - Paul Scherrer Institut EAWAG - Swiss Federal Institute for Environmental Science and Technology EMPA - Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Testing and Research EPFL - Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne WSL - Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snowand Landscape Research The ETH-domain Basle St. Gallen Zurich Lucerne Berne Lausanne Geneva Lugano

  3. There is no access to reliable Information so far • Basic questions • Which knowledge is available within the single institutions? • Which knowledge is available within certain research areas? • Which knowledge is available within certain application areas? • Which knowledge „is looking“ for an industrial application? • Which patents are available? • What is the knowledge of single researchers?

  4. Project goals • To establish a platform which allows • a simple presentation of information about exploitable knowledge on a common electronic user interface for all institutions and, at the same time • quick and user-friendly access to this information by the interested public • Basic conditions • a high degree of de-centralisation • the diversity of research and teaching • the variety of the IT environments in the different institutions

  5. Design principles (I) • Decentralised Editing by independent project-/research groups • Responsibility for content lies on one QA account per institution • Centralised resources for operation • Maximal use of existing information

  6. Design principles (II) • Data model and applications are realised once centrally • Clients enter the application locally via Web-Technology • User-databases are managed locally by the institutions • Contents are «activated» per Institution • only core information (meta-data) is held in the central data-base whereas detailed information can be found on web-pages linked with the meta-data base

  7. Projekt- homepages Projekt- homepages Non standardised data Project Websites Import Applications for editing and searching • Editing Tool • Authorisation Tool • DB-Admin-Tool Search application (probabilistic search) • Search application • (boolean search) • Compilation of • research reports ARAMIS Swiss Federal Research Information System Export Access via Internet ORACLE 8i Database Applications overview

  8. The architecture • The System is based on a «Three-Tier-Architecture» • A relational database (ORACLE 8i) with the structured meta-data and links to unstructured data • An application server which provides the application based on Java active server pages and which represents the intermediate layer • The user‘s standard browser

  9. www.knowledgetransfer.ch edits structured meta data • Project title/-number • Date of project start/end • Abstract • Keywords • Research field • Scientific target • Optional: ARAMIS-Data • Benefit of possible applications • Links to URLs • Personal data of researchers involved in the project • Possibilities for participation • Patent data/Product data • Publications • Editing data • by researchers or central organisational units • Management of authorisations by a flexible task concept

  11. Search application • Accessible via Internet • Sophisticated probabilistic search on standardised meta-data and linked web-sites (hit list: standardised project reports and URL) • Boolean search of standard fields • Optional • Compilation of research reports by institutions
