  1. Chapter 5 Reskin Moving Up and Taking Charge

  2. Sex/race segregation in the workplace has obvious affects on wage differences, however it also has affects on job mobility.

  3. Only a handful of white women/people of color still reach the top of a work hierarchy. This is intriguing given the popular discourse today (Dr. Leonard Sax) which states that white boys are less motivated than other girls. His study also finds that girls do better in school and better on tests. SO why are white boys still more successful in paid work?

  4. Promotion and Authority Gap What is the difference between promotion and authority?

  5. White Women/ People of Color fare better in the public sector than private sector. Even so, there still exists: • Glass Ceiling for white women/people of color and Glass Elevator for white men…... • Sticky Floor.

  6. Consequences of Promotion/Authority Gap • Why should we care that there is a promotion gap? • It’s discriminatory not to allow people equal opportunity. Studies show women do want to move up! • It keeps women’s wages low. • Reduces women’s opportunities to have autonomy.

  7. Why does the Promotion/Authority Gap Exist? • 1) Human Capital • less committed • less education • less trained.

  8. 2. Segregation • Different internal labor markets (job ladders) (see chart 89). • Men’s jobs are more visible and valued.

  9. 3.) Discrimination • Statistical discrimination • Homosocial reproduction • 4) Cultural Bias

  10. Remedies for Promotion/Authority Gap • 1) “Bridges” that connect job ladders • 2) Put in place formal promotion practices • 3) Raising the price of discrimination • 4) Pursue litigation and legislation
