  1. Overview Hernia Surgery in Mumbai, India

  2. A hernia is a bulging of an organ or a tissue through an abnormal opening. Hernias can be external or internal. Inguinal or groin hernias are the commonest and account for more than 70% of all hernias. Apart from the groin region hernias are commonly seen in the navel (umbilical hernia), above the navel in the midline (epigastric hernia) and sometimes through the scar of a previous operation in which case they are known as incisional hernia. They can also be lower down in the femoral canal and are known as the femoral hernias. The classical symptom of a hernia is a lump or a swelling that increases on exertion and decreases on resting. Sometimes it may be painful or may just lead to a dragging sensation. If the hernia becomes irreducible then there is a persistent swelling.

  3. Hernia can also be seen in young babies. These are congenital hernias. While umbilical hernia in young infants tend to close on their own by the age of 2 years, inguinal hernias usually need to be operated. In adults, most common cause for hernia is constant pressure on the abdominal wall that leads to weakening of the muscle wall and subsequent protrusion of the internal organs such as intestines. Chronic cough, constipation, urinary issues, pregnancy, ascites, extensive sports activities, lifting very heavy weights on a regular basis are all pre-disposing factors for developing a hernia. Dr.AparnaGovilBhasker is the best surgeon who provides open & keyhole surgery for hernia in Mumbai. Get an appointment to know about hernia treatment. Left untreated, hernias can lead to severe complications. They can cause pain and sometimes intestines or other internal organs may get stuck inside the hernias defect. This may lead to strangulation or obstruction and if not treated on time, it can lead to dire consequences. Hernia can only be repaired surgically. There is no other way to treat a hernia. Surgery can be performed either by open method or by laparoscopy (key hole surgery). Laparoscopic repair for hernia has become increasingly common now. It is done through tiny punctures and leads to much lesser pain in the post-surgery period. Patients recover much faster and get discharged from the hospital sooner. They are also able to return to work much earlier. Recently, newer modalities like laparoscopic abdominal wall reconstruction have come to the fore for repair of complex hernias.

  4. All hernias today are repaired using a mesh. It is the standard of care now. • Cost of hernia surgery depends on the type of hernia and also the type of mesh that is used to repair it. Hernia surgery cost is usually covered by insurance. • Hernia recurrence is sometimes a cause for concern. This is basically when a hernia re appears after surgical repair. The cause of recurrence can be manifold and depends on many factors. Some of these can be persistence of conditions causing increased intra-abdominal pressure such as constipation and urinary issues. These must be tackled before the surgery so that the root cause is taken care of. • Hernia surgery must not be delayed in order to prevent potential complications and the patients are advised to seek medical advice as soon as they detect a lump. • Dr. AparnaGovilBhasker is a Hernia Surgeon In Mumbai. She is one of the first surgeons in India to be accredited by the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) as a Center of Excellence (COE) surgeon in 2011.
