Jonah Chapter 1 • 1 The word of ADONAI came to Yonah the son of Amitai: 2 "Set out for the great city of Ninveh, and proclaim to it that their wickedness has come to my attention." 3 But Yonah, in order to get away from ADONAI, prepared to escape to Tarshish. He went down to Yafo, found a ship headed for Tarshish, paid the fare and went aboard, intending to travel with them to Tarshish and get away from ADONAI.

Jonah Chapter 1 • 4 However, ADONAI let loose over the sea a violent wind, which created such stormy conditions that the ship threatened to break to pieces. 5 The sailors were frightened, and each cried out to his god. They threw the cargo overboard to make the ship easier for them to control. Meanwhile, Yonah had gone down below into the hold, where he lay, fast asleep. 6 The ship's captain found him and said to him, "What do you mean by sleeping? Get up! Call on your god! Maybe the god will remember us, and we won't die."

They drew lots, and Yonah was singled out. 8 They said to him, "Tell us now, why has this calamity come upon us? What work do you do? Where are you from? What is your country? Which is your people?" 9 He answered them, "I am a Hebrew; and I fear ADONAI, the God of heaven, who made both the sea and the dry land."

For the men knew he was trying to get away from ADONAI, since he had told them. 11 They asked him, "What should we do to you, so that the sea will be calm for us?" - for the sea was getting rougher all the time. 12 "Pick me up," he told them, "and throw me into the sea. Then the sea will be calm for you; because I know it's my fault that this terrible storm has come over you."

But they couldn't, because the sea kept growing wilder against them. 14 Finally they cried to ADONAI, "Please, ADONAI, please! Don't let us perish for causing the death of this man, and don't hold us to account for shedding innocent blood; because you, ADONAI, have done what you saw fit."

  23. Today Show video of David (Start Video) Today we’re going to celebrate the holiest day of the year, Yom Kippur. But first we’re going to look at some of the history of this Holy Day.

  24. Yom Kippur Lev. 16:30-31 For it is on this day that atonement shall be made for you to cleanse you; and you shall be clean from all your sins before the L-rd. It is to be a Shabbat of solemn rest for you, that you may humble your souls; it is a permanent statute.

  25. Yom Kippur Yom Kippur goes by many different names. Yom Kippur itself is, yom means day and kippur means atonement.

  26. Yom Kippur 2. The Day of Face to Face. Only once a year could the High Priest go into the Holy of Holies and it was on this day.

  27. Yom Kippur We read this in Lev 16:2 where it says… And Yehova spoke to Moshe, “Speak to Aharon your brother not to come in at all times to the Set Apart place inside the veil, before the lid of atonement which is on the Ark, lest he die, because I appear in the cloud above the lid of the atonement. Then again Hebrews 9:6-7

  28. Yom Kippur Hebrews 9:6-7 And these having been prepared like this, the priests always went into the first part of the Mishkan accomplishing the services. But into the second part the high priest went alone once a year not without blood which he offered himself and for sins of ignorance of the people.

  29. Yom Kippur • The closest place one could be to G-d was in the Holy of Holies. • When the High Priest was in the Holy of Holies, he was almost face to face with G-d Himself. • Thus the name, “Face to Face”.

  30. Yom Kippur • It’s also called “The Day” or “The Great Day”. • It’s called this because it’s the most important day of the year. • A day when we could be free from sin. • Remember that this was not for individual sin but for Israel as a community.

  31. Yom Kippur • We still repented for our own sins, but we also sought repentance for the sins of the community on this day. • The Talmud tells us that we are responsible for the sins of our Jewish brothers and sisters. There’s a certain amount of truth to that.

  32. Yom Kippur • We need to be sure that we don’t cause our brothers and sisters to sin • And if they do fall we need to try to do our best to help them recover.

  33. Yom Kippur It’s also called “The Fast”. It’s called that because we fast on this day. If we fast only one day a year, this is the day we do it. (there are other times we fast)

  34. Yom Kippur Even some non religious Jews will fast on this day… just in case 

  35. Yom Kippur • We read in Vayikra (Lev) 16:29 • And this shall be a statute forever unto you: that in the 7th month on the tenth day of the month ye shall afflict yourselves and do no work at all whither it be one of your own country or a stranger that sojourneth among you.

  36. Yom Kippur To “afflict one’s self” is a Hebrew idiom which means to go without food. Many Rabbis interpret that to also include water. We don’t believe that should be included.

  37. Yom Kippur Some extremist Jews have even adapted the Catholic ideas of “afflicting oneself” to lashing oneself. Again, we think this is going too far and even goes against a fundamental of Scripture.

  38. Yom Kippur 5. This day is also called the “Great Shofar Day” (Shofar HaGadole in Hebrew).

  39. Yom Kippur In order to understand this name we have to first know about the three Feast Days when the Shofar is blown. The first trump is at Shavuot.

  40. Yom Kippur The second is at Rosh Hashanah The third is at Yom Kippur and it is called the Great Trump.

  41. Yom Kippur I’m going to go off the beaten path here for a moment then I’ll get back to the names of Yom Kippur. It’s my opinion that this is the day that Yeshua will return.

  42. Yom Kippur Isaiah 27:13 says… And in that day it shall be that “The Great Shofar” is blown, and those who were perishing in the land of Ashsure (Assyria) and the outcasts in the land of Mitzrayim (Egypt) shall come, and shall worship Yehovah on the Set Apart mountain in Yerushalayim.

  43. Yom Kippur We also read in Matt. 24:31 Yeshua here is talking about the end days… And He shall send His angles with a Great Shofar (Shofar HaGadole) blast and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds from one end of heaven to the other.

  44. Yom Kippur Isaiah 52 gives us another clue as to when Yeshua is returning. In Isaiah 52:15 it is written: "So shall He sprinkle many nations; the kings shall shut their mouths at Him: for that which had not been told them shall they see; and that which they had not heard shall they consider."

  45. Yom Kippur The phrase, "So shall He sprinkle many nations" is a reference to the sprinkling of the blood on the mercy seat by the high priest during Yom Kippur (Leviticus 16:14). This is also referred to in Leviticus 1:5,11; 3:2,8,13; 4:6,17; 7:2.

  46. Yom Kippur Joel 2 is also about the Last Days and we read there.. Joel 2:15-16 Blow the trumpet in Zion sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly: gather the people, sanctify the congregation, assemble the elders, gather the children, and those that suck the breasts: let the bridegroom go forth of his chamber, and the bride out of her closet.

  47. Yom Kippur This term in Hebrew “call a solemn assembly” is terminology used in reference to Yom Kippur. It all adds up, Yom Kippur being the day of repentance (teshuvah). Your last chance to make things right. Yeshua being ever so patient right up to the last day.
