Mining Technology/Engineering from Southern WV Community & Technical College • Southern Illinois University/Engineering and project management design • B.A. Business Administration/Business Administration and Marketing options from Bluefield State University • M.A. Masters of Arts in Management from Regent University Graduate School of Business • Continuing education through Leadership Studies (Higher Education Administration-Doctoral Program, Ed. D.) classes at Marshall University

The Need • 21st Century in the coal mining industry needs “Next Generation” Supervisors and Managers who possess a broader range of skills to match their hands-on experience. • Skills in expert handling of massive new regulations, new mining technologies and techniques and, personnel demands while still enabling mining operations to be profitable and to meet growing consumer demand for energy.

Meeting the Need • Gained a greater understanding of the practical needs of modern coal mining for INDUSTRY BUY-IN & SUPPORT • Analyzed academic competencies to meet these needs including, Management/Supervision, Sciences: Geology & Environmental Science, Leadership, Project Management, Communications, Labor Relations, Mine Law & Safety, World Economics & the Energy Sector which meets the needs of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD • In all, 23 courses.

How to Deliver? • Totally Online, Weekend college “Fastrack,” Hybrid Classes, several core and major courses are available via traditional classroom • Blackboard Vista 8 and now Blackboard Learn 9.1 for 24/7 course delivery HIGHLY VALUED by mining professionals due to highly varied work schedules • Designed into all online classes, high levels of learner participation via discussions, position paper defenses, group chat sessions, interactive video.

  10. Numbers Tell the Story • Yearly Enrollments/Increase each year since its inception in 1999 • Graduates/75% successful completion rate • Graduate Prospects continual increases each term (Dec and May) • Currently, 180 students covering 5 states and international interest.

Blackboard & Mine Management • Meets critical time management requirements for all leaners • Allows class members to share valuable mining-specific experiences, applied practices and hard-learned lessons as well as their observations which have been put into immediate use. • Allows instructors to be more intimately involved in the learning process (especially with learners new to online instruction), to be easily available to answer questions and to counsel learner’s with unique instructional issues.

The Future • Blackboard Collaborate anticipated to becoming “on line” Fall 2013…will enable web conferencing capabilities, mobile collaboration, instant messaging, and voice authoring. • Expanded Lecture Capture integration for 24/7 access to instructor lectures, guest presentations and, learner projects to be shared. • Blackboard Mobile, Spring 2013 roll-out for smart phone access.
