  4. ~ The experiment Colossians 3:12-14 • 12Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves • ~~~~~~~~~~ • EndousasqeounwseklektoitouQeou • The idea of putting on or enveloping something in. • “Put on the full armor of God.”

  5. ~ The experiment Colossians 3:12-14 • 12Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves • ~~~~~~~~~~ • EndousasqeounwseklektoitouQeou • The word order in the Greek creates a bit of a different nuance of meaning than the NIV text does. • The Greek has “Clothe yourselves, therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved . . .” • “He kicked my dog.” versus “My dog he kicked.” • The Greek emphasizes the action while the English text emphasizes the identity. • These characteristics are not automatic, but rather must be actively put on by us. • Wedding clothes of Matthew 22:11-14?

  6. ~ The experiment Colossians 3:12-14 • 12Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves • ~~~~~~~~~~ • EndousasqeounwseklektoitouQeou • This is a “middle” voice, in which the actor both does and receives the action. It is not that God clothes us while we sit passively by, but rather that we put on what God has already provided for us as we seek to walk with Christ. • Galatians 5:22-23 • But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”

  7. • II Peter 1:3-4 • His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

  8. ~ The experiment Colossians 3:12-14 • 12Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves • ~~~~~~~~~~ • EndousasqeounwseklektoitouQeou • It is also good to note that the verb is plural and that the list of characteristics are all interactive. You cannot be compassionate without touching others. • Living a life that honors Christ cannot be done as a monk.

  9. ~ The experiment Colossians 3:12-14 • 12Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves • ~~~~~~~~~~ • EndousasqeounwseklektoitouQeou • Hugonian thinking: • 1. The cultural use of the eklektos would included either choosing the best of a group, a sampling or simply taking one’s share, as in a taxation. • 2. It is the group that is in view, not the individual. (Israel) • 3. We are God’s share of fallen humanity, the example of what God desires humanity to turn out like. We are the experiment of his grace, like Israel was supposed to be. The world is the control group.

  10. ~ The experiment Colossians 3:12-14 • 12Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves • ~~~~~~~~~~ • Matthew 5:14-16 • “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 15Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”

  11. ~ The experiment Colossians 3:12-14 • 12Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves • ~~~~~~~~~~ • Philippians 2:14-16 • Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of Godwithout fault in a crooked & depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life

  12. ~ The experiment Colossians 3:12-14 • 12Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves • ~~~~~~~~~~ • I Peter 2:9-12 • But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of • darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God;once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. • Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul.Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deedsand glorify God on the day he visits us.

  13. ~ The experiment Colossians 3:12-14 • 12Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves • ~~~~~~~~~~ • Matthew 20:25-28 • “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— just as the Son ofMan did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransomfor many.” • (humility)
