  3. Bourgeoisie • The capitalists, or those who owned the means of production. • White collar

  4. These were NOT • The rich and the poor

  5. Marx • Believed that the Proletariat would rise up and revolt against their capitalist oppressors • Why? Because of the poor working conditions and pay. • Believed in a classless society. • Everyone is equal

  6. Laissez-faire Industrial Capitalism • You can have a strong and powerful nation only through production and the making of money. • Profit drives capitalists to succeed • Nation built on the backs of labor

  7. The Government • Looked the other way in order to achieve a strong and powerful nation: Laissez-faire Industrial Capitalism.

  8. The Supreme Court • Upheld the Restraint of Trade Act that made it illegal to go on strike.

  9. What is Restraint of Trade? • The government sends in the National Guard to break up a strike. Some were shot.

  10. Unionization • Outlawed (Restraint of Trade) • Slowly gained strength, • Better wages, shorter hours, better working conditions.
