Academia: Follow the Money • University / Department: want money, fame • academic year salary, office/lab, startup, some student support, some infrastructure (equipment, travel) • NSF: want science/education, fame • student support, summer salary (two months), some infrastructure (typically not equipment), travel • DARPA: want demos/deliverables, fame • can outfit entire labs (equipment, students, staff support, postdocs) • Other: military labs, NASA Career Perspectives

Industry: Follow the Money • Corporate “tax”: want patents, fame • old “Bell Labs” model: fund basic research • Business Units: run cheaper, new income • work more closely with those closer to customers • “applied research” a challenge/skill • Intellectual Property • create patentable ideas, work with lawyers • licence to other companies Career Perspectives

  7. Faculty: A Business Unto Itself “What do you teach?” More like a business… Research & Development • innovate!, know your competitors/strategic partners. Manufacturing • get papers out, review, deliver demos Management • hire students, motivate, solve personnel issues Sales & Marketing • talks, web page, chat up colleagues & funders Career Perspectives

Typical Day • 7:00am up, quick email • 7:30am kids up, make them breakfast • 8:30am kids off to school • 9:00am more email answering • 11:00am project or funding conference call • 12:00pm eat, start driving to Rutgers • 12:30am attend colloquium • 2:00pm meeting with student • 3:00pm project or funding conference call • 4:00pm respond to as much email as possible • 6:00pm head home, brainstorm a bit in the car • 6:30pm dinner, get kids to bed • 8:30pm back to email • 11:00pm Jon Stewart and fold laundry • 11:30pm web surfing, check next day calendar • 12:00pm bed Career Perspectives

Business #1 • Administrative-General: Identify and implement improved streamlined processes while keeping our business moving. • Consumer & Market Knowledge: Lead the understanding of the global market and consumers with innovative research techniques. • Customer Business Development: Develop strategic selling concepts and activities, and consult with customers to grow our business. • Customer Services / Integrated Logistics: Manage the flow of raw materials, packaging and finished product through the supply chain. • Engineering: Develop new products, design new processes or implement production. • External Relations: Function as strategic business leaders in all areas of public affairs. Business #2 • Finance & Accounting Management: Influence global business decisions and provide financial leadership at all organization levels worldwide. • Human Resources: Partner with line management to set direction, develop and deploy strategies to create high performing organizations. • Information Technology: Impact global market-leading business objectives through leadership utilizing the internet and the hottest technologies. • Intellectual Property: Develop as a professional and legal manager with a high-level practice in virtually all major areas of law. • Legal Division: Develop as a professional and legal manager with a high-level practice in virtually all major areas of law. • Marketing: Create the vision and deploy plans to build innovative brands which delight consumers and build our business. • Purchases: Strategically source global materials and services needed to produce P&G's products. Business #3 • Research & Development: Create the future with innovative products, packages, processes and technologies to improve the lives of consumers worldwide. • U.S. Educated International: Global management focused against on the ground operations in over 70 countries. • Workplace Services / Corporate Facilities Management: Design and manage corporate facilities, research laboratories and internal services. • Plant Technician: Create and execute the vision for innovative brands which delight the consumers and build our business.   12. Time Breakdown This year was exceptional in that I asked for money approximately once every 11 days (including weekends). Much less time spent writing, preparing talks, or actually doing research, which ideally is how I'd spend most of my time. This year will be more teaching and less (I hope!) asking for money.
