  1. Why? It’s the new normal

  2. 90 percent of employers today use LinkedIn to check on applicants

  3. Contacts

  4. My LinkedIn Network • I have 485 connections • Interesting number is the 2nd Connections number (75,023 people for me) • These are people who directly know my contacts • All in all, my 485 connections link me to 4,591,871 professionals

  5. First Step – Set up a good profile • Characterize yourself in the role you want to get – brand yourself • Put up a good, professional picture – smile! • Short summary (1-3 paragraphs) • Be explicit about education • Expertise

  6. Creating a headline

  7. Build up your connections

  8. Who do you connect to? “Make sure you’re connected to people who are invested in your future.” -- Krista Canfield, public relations manager at LinkedIn

  9. Think about contacts • Don’t ask just anyone • Get people who know you professionally • Bosses are good • Internship supervisors are great • Professors are also good • Clients are great • Classmates can be good

  10. Create good invitations • Don’t just use the boilerplate invitations that LinkedIn provides • The more tailored and specific the better • Keep it short • Make sure it’s well written and professional

  11. Be always thinking about recommendations • How to request If you do a great job for someone – a professor, a supervisor, even within a group project – ask the person if he or she would write a short recommendation for you on LinkedIn.

  12. Status Updates

  13. Do This: 1. Share links (using a URL shortener) to interesting articles, websites or video you have found that some individuals in your network might appreciate. 2. Talk about an event you are attending or have attended to encourage involvement and/or questions about what you learned there.3. If you are a job seeker, don't use this to say, "Hey, I'm still looking for a job." Rather, mention job fairs you are attending, people you are interviewing with, networking events you are going to, etc. Remember--having your name show up on a consistent basis on your entire network's home page is extremely important whether you are in job-seeking mode or not.4. Use the "Like" feature when you see a helpful update from one of your connections. Doing this shares that update with your entire network. This is a great way to give the writer of the helpful update exposure to your network that he/she wouldn't normally have.

  14. Don’t Do This: 1. Mentioning personal things--like what you had for breakfast and the fact your dog is sick today--is just wrong. This suggests to the business professionals in your network that you don't really respect their time.2. Avoid talking about topics that might be sensitive to some of your audience. I am too embarrassed to even think about, let alone share, some of the items I see posted as status updates. You know what I mean. If your mother wouldn't want you talking about it, don't put it in your LinkedIn Status Box.3. Think twice before posting your physical whereabouts.4. The netiquette on LinkedIn is no more than a couple updates per day, whereas on Twitter you are almost expected to tweet 20 times per day. So, watch the frequency of your LinkedIn status updates.

  15. Join LinkedIn Groups • Join groups that are of interest professionally • Join groups that have been joined by people who are hiring agents in companies • Post content regularly to groups

  16. From LinkedIn Consultant Donna Surdula … “LinkedIn Groups is the EASIEST way to expand your LinkedIn network. LinkedIn allows you to join up to 50 LinkedIn Groups. JOIN ALL 50 GROUPS!!! But I don’t want you to join just any LinkedIn Groups. I WANT YOU TO JOIN LINKEDIN GROUPS WITH LARGE NUMBERS OF MEMBERS! When I say large numbers, I am not talking a hundred or a thousand. “

  17. Tips for Posting • Will the members of this group find my content valuable? • Is this post self-serving or group-serving? • Am I posting too often? • Did I format my entry correctly?

  18. Looking for jobs Suggestions
