  1. EURATOM FP7 Framework: Preparation of a Sustainable Nuclear Fission Technology Platform Joachim U. Knebel Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe Programm NUKLEAR Objectives and Structure Kompetenzverbund Kerntechnik, FZK, 9. September 2005 1

  2. Sustainable Nuclear Fission Technology Platform Objectives Overall objective: • Develop a coherent European strategy, provide guidance to the Framework activities, and reinforce the role of EURATOM as a partner in GIF.   Major Issues: • Improving the performance of currently operating (Generation II) and future near-term (Generation III) Light Water Reactors (LWR) while maintaining a high degree of safety, and performing studies regarding the feasibility of the Supercritical Water Reactor (SCWR). • Establishing a sustainable, closed fuel cycle using innovative (Generation IV) fast neutron reactor systems for electricity production. • Establishing a commercially viable Very High Temperature Reactor (VHTR) for process heat and hydrogen production. • Assuring adequate training to preserve and enhance the human competence in the nuclear field. • Cooperation with other EU-Projects, especially the hydrogen platform, geological waste disposal, fusion materials activities.
