  1. A little about Mr. Reid • This is my 5th year in teaching • I’m a Carolina Boy • I studied History and Philosophy at Mars Hill College • I got lost in Europe for 5 years! • I Received a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) from UNCC. • I am Currently a Doctoral Candidate at UNCG in the Cultural Foundations Program

  2. My family name comes from Scotland, though I have ancestry from many groups, including African American and Native American

  3. COUNTRY BOY BORN AND RAISED! • I grew up in Northern Iredell County. • My father’s family has deep roots in Union Grove, NC. • I love fishing, hiking, camping, and whitewater rafting. • I still have a soft spot for the roots music of my region, including Bluegrass and gospel.

  4. BUT…I Also like to explore the rest of the world! • I lived in Northeast England for five years • I traveled extensively throughout Northern and Western Europe. • I spent a great deal of my time exploring historical sites, like the one in the background that you can see me and my friend trying to storm!

  5. WELCOME TO HUMANITES! • We have an awesome opportunity this year to experience a brand new state curriculum before many other schools in the district and the state. This new curriculum will focus more on historical methods and fits well with the IB objectives. We will be operating a textbook free class as well, relying instead on real historical sources both primary and secondary.

  6. Strategic learning Goal WE WILL MEET SOCIAL STUDIES EXPECTATIONS SET BY THE NORTH CAROLINA STANDARD COURSE OF STUDY AS WELL HUMANITIES OBJECTIVES SET BY IB INTERNATIONAL. AND WE WILL MEASURE OUR PROGRESS THROUGH IB CRITERION RUBRIC GROWTH.

  7. CHINA, ROME, ANCIENT EGYPT AND MORE! THIS YEAR WILL BE AN EXPLORATION THROUGH THE FIRST THREE THOUSAND YEARS OF WORLD HISTORY. WE WILL LITERALLY START WITH THE INVENTION OR FIRE AND WORK OUR WAY UP TO THE EUROPEAN RENAISSNACE. ALONG THE WAY WE WILL PICK UP AN UNDERSTANDING OF BASIC GEOGRAPHIC TOOLS AS WELL AS A GRASP OF INTERPRETING DIFFERENT TYPES OF HISTORICAL SOURCES, FROM FIRST HAND ACCOUNTS TO ARCHEOLOGICAL ARTIFACTS.

OUR MAP FOR THE YEAR (THE ESSENTIALS): • Essential one: I can explain historical events through making charts and narratives. • I can read, understand, and use primary sources. • I can read, understand, and use primary and secondary sources together. • I can explain how the movement of people affects civilizations and societies. • I can compare historical themes with modern day themes. • I can explain how new ideas and inventions change societies and civilizations. • I can explain how people and groups change societies. • I understand the difference between cultural features and physical features, and how each influences civilizations. I claim this Castle For North Carolina!

ESSENTIALS CONTINUED • I can explain why people, goods, and ideas move and how this movement affects societies. • I can compare the physical and human features of different regions. • I can explain why and how people adapt their environments and adapt to their environments • I can use geographic tools to analyze changes in societies • I can make geographic tools that show understanding of geographic ideas • I can explain how the availability of resources and the conflict over resources impacted development of societies • I can explain how an individual’s quality of life is impacted by a society’s economy
