  4. i. Church became under fire • ii. Had become increasingly caught up in worldy affairs • iii. Maintained lavished lifestyles • How? Promoted the sale of indulgences. Increased fees for marriages and baptisms.

  6. IV. Early Leaders of the Reformation Are: • A. John Wycliffe- 1300s wanted the church to reform its formal and empty ceremony • B. Erasmus- wanted the Bible translated into German and discusses the ignorant and immoral behavior of the clergy in his The Praise of Folly.

  7. C. Thomas More- desired a perfect society • D. Martin Luther- will emerge as the main shaker and mover of the Catholic Church in Germany. • E. John Calvin- had an effect on the direction of reformation in Geneva, Switzerland
