  3. What is SEO? • Enhancing a site’s search engine rankings through internal and external methods. • Two areas: • Organic • Pay Per Click/Paid Inclusion

  4. Why Is SEO So Important? • Most people now use the Big Search Engines • Pre-qualified customers/viewers • 85% of consumer traffic comes through organic listings

  6. So Why is SEO Important to Technical Communicators? • Help people find your information • It’s not all about selling things…

  7. The Big 4: Number One • Keyword Analysis • Start with a list of phrases • www.WordTracker.com • Research phrases that are popular yet have low competition • Whittle down to a short, targeted list

  8. The Big 4: Number Two • Build a “Easy to Navigate” website • Why? Spiders crawl the web • Create lots of ways to link around your site • Don’t rely on JavaScript for all linking • Create a site map • Dynamic sites can be challenging

  9. The Big 4: Number Three • Get other Relevant web sites to link to yours • Inbound links help (Google loves ‘em) • Stay within your niche • Nicely request links from other site owners • Include key phrase as part of the link • Example: “Find helpful WordPerfect hints at Bill’s House of Tips”

  10. The Big 4: Number Four • Create Keyword-Rich Text-heavy Website • Use your key phrases naturally in text • more text better than less text • The Golden Rule: Make it USEFUL and they will come! Useful Sites WILL rank high!
