  • Versatile Anomalous and time resolved SAXS/WAXS/GISAXS/USAXS beamline [12-ID-C]

The outboard x-ray beam, originating from the first insertion device will supply beam to 12-ID-C.

Initially at an outboard trajectory of 0.5 mrad of the centerline, this beam will be deflected

by the existing 1200 mm long mirror, located at 31.4 meters from the straight section,

by 4mrad, to a total of 3.5 mrad inboard

  • The hutches will be connected directly to the air system to maintain a more constant temperature.
  • It has been observed that the 12-ID-C and B hutches can become very much warmer than the experimental hall which results in wide temperature swings when the doors are opened.

Possible Time-line for 12-ID Upgrade

12 –ID Horizontal Mirror
  • In April 2006 the mirror overheated to 190 C when the cooling water was turned off but the heaters remained on(heaters are used to focus the beam). Indium metal (mp 157 C) which is which is used to ensure contact with the copper cooling blocks and the heaters melted. From visual inspection the mirror appeared to be free of metal particles
  • However, there appeared to be some degradation in performance.
  • Over this long shut-down the mirror has been removed, inspected and characterized for slope error and roughness.
  • A roughness on average of 5 A was measured
  • The mirror is being re-installed

  • APS Strategic Plan calls for 12-ID to become a dedicated Small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) facility.
  • The 12-ID SAXS facility (FY 1996 DOE Scientific Facilities Initiative) is 50% of the GUP beamtime with x2 oversubscription.
  • SAXS publications - 124 and users - 291
  • The increasing demand for SAXS beam time has been driven by:
    • Research into the structure and dynamics of nanoscale materials
    • Increased interest in soft matter
    • Time-dependent structural investigations
  • Plan was endorsed by the SAC review of Sector 12 in March, 2005
