SMR 6 – PIGS • National Pig Census – Sept. 2017 • 1674 active herds with • 1,699,565 million pigs including 151,188 breeding pigs, 1,546,495 fattening pigs and others 1882. • Cork, Cavan and Tipperary account for 46.5% of the total pig production. • 175 herds (10.4%) > 3001 pigs account for 85.63% of total production.
SMR 6 - PIGS Significant variation in herd size:
SMR 6 – Pigs • Objective is to maintain the system of IDR for pigs in order to facilitate their traceability and to reduce the risk of spreading disease, e.g. Blue Ear, Swine vesicular disease, • It is critical that the traceability of pigs is maintained at the highest standard.
SMR 6 - PIGS REGISTRATION • Registration number granted by the DVO. • Number commences with the letter Z with 5 characters e.g. ZA223 used for all identification purposes under NPITS. • Pig Herds must be registered with the National Pig Identification and Tracing System (NPITS). • In place since 01/07/2002 introduced for traceability, disease control, marketability and consumer assurance.
SMR 6 - PIGS IDENTIFICATION • In the case of movement of pigs: • To slaughter plant – Slap mark on the shoulder. • Off the Holding other than to a slaughter plant tagged on left ear. • Onto the holding – tagged on the right ear.
SMR 6 - PIGS MOVEMENTS: • Notify the Database – paperless system, designed to operate by telephone or email. • Notify all movements out of the herd to SWS (excluding factory) at least 24 hours prior to the event. • Movements to factory – same day • Movements into the Herd notified within 24 hours of receipt of the pigs.

SMR 6 - PIGS Documentation Required: Pig Dispatch Documents. Pig Register.
SMR 6 – PIGS Dispatch Dockets and Register • Since 01/10/2010 farmers must maintain a pig register. • Register is a rolling total of the number of pigs on the holding. • Each consignment of pigs must be accompanied by a Dispatch Docket. • Dispatch Dockets must be retained for 3 years.
SMR 6 - Pigs • Details required on the Dispatch Docket • Name and address of owner • Pig herd number • Number and type of pigs loaded • Name and address of veterinary practitioner • Destination of pigs
SMR 6 - PIGS • Dispatch Docket is in triplicate format. • Pigs direct to slaughter plant/another herd owner – top copy (green) of this form to accompany the consignment. • Pigs thru’ a mart – two parts of this form top copy (green) and middle copy (pink) to accompany the consignment. • The bottom copy (yellow) should be retained.
SMR - Pigs • Pig Register must include • The date of movement • The type of movement • The total number of pigs present on the holding • The DD reference for each movement
SMR 6 - PIGS INSPECTIONS: Checks are carried out to ensure • The holding is registered with NPITS. • Dispatch Dockets are checked for compatibility with the Database. • The Register is being maintained. • Tagging of all breeding stock and stock moved onto/off holding with approved tags. • Vets – undertake the welfare aspects of controls.

SMR 6 - PIGS Summary: • Herds must be registered with NPITS. • All breeding stock must be tagged and all animals moved between units. • Movements out must be notified 24 hours in advance. • Inward movements notified within 24 hours on receipt. • Dispatch dockets must accompany each batch of pigs moved. • Holding Register must be maintained.
