  1. Lab final exam • Arrange one hour during your normal lab time with you lab partners • Special times can be arranged for those with conflicts • If Matt can’t do the final in 30 minutes, it will be shortened or the time will be extended! • Final details to be announced Friday

  2. Lab final exam • Au/C Grade = 30/(500kX-your highest magnification image that instructor deems to be “sharp”) • Polystyrene on glass 30/(50kX-your highest magnification image that instructor deems to be “sharp”) You may not coat. • Quantitative analysis of microscope slide Grade = 40*(1- manufacturer specs/your values). You may coat in advance of class. Half credit for qualitative analysis. • 55 minute time limit. • Is this unrealistic?

  3. Lab this week and last lab report Your own samples 1 page summary lab report + images. Due next week at the lab final

  4. Lab this week • Who wants to do EBSD? • See Eric to set up a time • Who wants to do more ESEM? • ESEM on your samples • Who wants to do XRF? • XRF on your samples • Option 4: if you don’t have any samples worthy of the ESEM or other techniques • Is anybody in this category? • We’ll think of something

  5. Projects • Relevant to those signed up for four credits • Project reports due end of next week • Earlier would be appreciated

  6. Electron BackScatter Diffraction • How does it work: • Electrons have an associated wavelength • Crystalline materials have a regular periodic structure • Crystalline materials have a regular periodic distribution of charges • Electrons scatter off charges • Scattering by a regular periodic array leads to interference patterns • Interference patterns are characteristic of what scattered them

  7. Applications • Metallurgy • Grain size • Grain orientation • Misorientation at grain boundaries • Microelectronics (application of metallurgy) • Microstructure of metallization • Recrystallization • Lead-free solders

  8. Applications • Ceramics • Alumina, Zirconia…any crystalline material • Relate mechanical properties to structure • Relate structure to processing • Geology • Deformation structures • Relation among phases in rocks • Grain boundaries • Orientations at grain boundaries
