  1. Inferencing English II September 20th and 21st, 2012

  2. Journal5 full minutes of writing Have you ever been unfairly judged? When and why? Be specific. Have you ever judged others unfairly? What were the circumstances? Explain. Do you find that you judge others or look down on a certain group or type of person? Explain. Finally, do you think that it is human nature to judge or is it a learned trait? Explain.

  3. The Lunch Date • We are going to watch a short film called “The Lunch Date.” Pay close attention to the details as they unfold. There’s a twist, so watch for it. • After the video, you will work in your table groups to draw some significant inferences and support them with evidence and details from the film.

  4. Inferencing Discussion You will be given 10 minutes to discuss and write on this topic. ALL STUDENTS MUST WRITE THE DISCUSSION POINTS IN THEIR NOTEBOOKS -Based on the film, what can you infer about the woman's lifestyle (how much money does she have, what part of town does she live in, etc)? Why? What evidence do you have to back up your claim?-What can you infer about the woman's feelings toward those who are not like her? Give examples to support your inference.-What can you infer about the director's purpose? What message did he want his viewers to come away with? Support your claim with evidence.

  5. Theme for English B • The poem we are about to read is written by Langston Hughes. Feel free to mark the poem for strong diction, imagery, metaphors, etc. • You will be asked to come to a conclusion about the theme (the central message we should take away), so be thinking about it as we read.

  6. Journal8 minutes • Based on the poem, what role does race play in the way the speaker views himself? Be sure to cite evidence from the text to support your claim. • What theme does Hughes want the reader to take away from this poem? In other words, what is the central message of the poem? Cite evidence in support of your claim.

  7. Exit Slip • Write your name in the upper right hand corner of a Post-It note. How confident are you about drawing inferences and supporting them with evidence? Very Confident: You can draw and easily support inferences with evidence. Okay: You feel okay about drawing inferences, but may be a little shaky on supporting them with evidence. I’m lost: You are struggling to draw inferences and to support them.
