  1. Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) Rev 7/16

  2. What is MESA? MESA is changing the face of science, technology and engineering by creating and developing a new generation of STEM leaders. Our programs fuel diversity by propelling historically underrepresented groups towards STEM degrees and professional careers. We bridge classroom learning with real-world applications, and employ rigorous academics, leadership preparation, a peer community and collaborative problem-solving training to produce highly-skilled graduates who meet the STEM industry’s workforce needs.

  3. The Need for MESA In California: • An estimated 3 million college-educated workers will retire between 2005 and 2025. • California has almost 900,000 STEM jobs, expected to increase to 1.1 million —or 19% —by 2018.

  4. Science and math education California ranks • 45th among all states in students taking advanced math & science courses • 48th for eighth grade proficiency in math • Last for fourth grade science proficiency (tied with Mississippi, Arizona and Hawaii)

  5. Why California needs MESA:MESA works! Percentage of MESA vs. all California public high school grads who went to college immediately after graduation Stats for 09-10

  6. Why California needs MESA:MESA works! Destinations of MESA high school graduates 97% of MESA community college students transferred to four-year institutions as science, engineering or math majors. Stats for 09-10

  7. Why California needs MESA:MESA works! • Top five campuses of MESA high school grads • CSU Long Beach • UC Irvine • UC Los Angeles • San Jose State • UC Berkeley Stats for 09-10

  8. Why California needs MESA:MESA works! • Top MEP majors • Mechanical Engineering • Civil Engineering • Electrical Engineering • Computer Science • Computer Engineering Stats for 09-10 • Top MCCP majors • Engineering • Biology • Mathematics • Computer Science • Liberal Arts

  9. Why California needs MESA:MESA works! • California MESA has been replicated in 10 states. • Nearly 100 companies work with MESA because of its outstanding track record.

  10. “After 40 years, MESA remains a model on how to ‘get it right’ for students in the fields of mathematics, engineering and science.“ Tom Torlakson State Superintendent of Public Instruction “MESA’s goals and objectives align very well with the focus of the SanDisk Foundation. We look forward to helping these determined and hardworking students continue their professional and personal development and grow into our next generation of tech leaders” Tom Baker San Disk Human Resources SVP

  11. Mission Statement California MESA provides educationally and economically disadvantaged students and their families with the essential skills and resources to achieve success in school, career, life, and STEM-related disciplines. CA MESA mobilizes and aligns the resources of California’s diverse educational institutions, industry, and other partners to create and implement an integrated program that maximizes impact and outcomes.

  12. Vision Statement California’s students excel in STEM pathways, from elementary to graduate school and into careers where they accelerate and build the Golden State’s leadership in research, industry, and service.

  13. Who MESA Serves (2014-15) Total students served: 25,011 • MSP: 17,836 • 367 K-12 schools • 19 centers • MCCP: 4,172 • Centers at 35 California community colleges • MEP: 3,003 • Centers at 13 universities Stats for 09-10
