Learn how to do research. To write my books I have visited the Cockroach Hall of Fame, learned ballroom dancing, and gone on a dinosaur dig. Whatever your interests, it's all "research." I try to teach some of the tricks of finding the perfect detail that makes writing come alive.
Experience and talk about: What's funny, and what's not (teasing, sarcasm, making fun of others). My book, My Life as a Fifth-Grade Comedian, shows how important it is to be careful about humor, and the damage that can be done by adults or children who use humor in hurtful ways.
Magic tricks. As a child I spent a lot of time day-dreaming. Now I have magic tricks that help children value the "I" and the "Magic" in all of us.
My Life as a Fifth-Grade Comedian
"The whole exploration of what's funny and what's not gives an extra dimension to the laugh-off preparations and gives rise to endless jokes, which the author collected from kids....The fine line that divides comedy from bitterness and teasing from harassment is poignantly explored: we laugh in order not to cry." --Publishers Weekly
"[Levy's] mysteries have enormous appeal because of their combination of humor and sleuthing set in familiar situations." --The Washington Post
If You Were There When They Signed the Constitution
"Elizabeth Levy's If You Were There When They Signed the Constitution was written for younger readers, and does an excellent job over all. It starts with the revolutionary background of the Constitution and goes through ratification....It is written in a brisk and catchy style. At times, in fact, Ms. Levy resembles Mr. Benchley in her ability to summarize complex situations and ideas simply and accurately." --Pauline Maier, The New York Times
