  1. Elyse Joanna Marla Sarah Flat Leadership vs. Short Leadership

  2. Flat Leadership vs. Short Leadership • Lessons Learned from the Brits • Relatively flat business environment • Decentralized authority • Nelson trusted his sailors’ expertise since they were life-time seamen • Nelson sailed with his fleet • Innovative for the time period • Not afraid to deviate from the regular strategy • What Not to Napoleon • Not confident in his ability, sailors weren’t inspired • The sailors didn’t identify with the cause, no common heritage

  3. Modern Day Applications • Resource Based Theory • Tangible resources don’t necessarily translate to successful ventures • i.e. Big Armada Spain/France vs. Seafaring England • Companies with a systematic, fixed strategy are less successful than competitors who are flexibile • Must be able to change as the environment changes • Staff must be able to use new technology (resources) • Examples: • Zappos – no need for a fancy physical store to sell shoes • NYC Bloomberg bullpen – flat structure encourages trust & loyalty among employees
