  1. Statistics Terms Definitions for a list of values Example: 2 4 4 5 6 9 17 85 Mean – The Average – Add all the values and divide by the number of number in the list Mean = = = 16.5 Median - The number in the middle or the average of the two numbers in the middle. Med = = 5.5

  2. 2 4 4 5 6 9 17 85 Mode – The number(s) in the list that occurs most often in the list. The may be one mode, no mode or more that one mode. Mod = 4 Range – The difference between the largest and the smallest numbers in the list Range = 85 – 2 = 83

  3. 2 4 4 5 6 9 17 85 Quartile – The three numbers that divide the list into four quarters. Q1 = = 4, Q2 = Median 5.5, Q3 = = 13 Inter Quartile Range - The difference between the third quartile and the first quartile. Q Range = 13-4 = 9

  4. 2 4 4 5 6 9 17 85 Outlier – A value in the list that is much smaller or larger that the other values Outlier = 85 Standard Deviation – how much variation the values are from the mean. σ = 26.25 See Normal Curve diagram page 757 in Text Book

  5. Finding Standard Deviation – Graphing Calc. TI-30X IIS: 2nd Stat → 1-Var → Enter → Data → X1 = enter # →↓→ FRQ =1→ ↓ X2 =…. Stat Var → exit Stat TI-30XAEnter # →Σ+→FRQ = 1 → Enter # → Σ+ →FRQ = 1 … STATVAR → 2nd CSR

  6. Histogram – A graphical representation that organizes the frequency of values in to ranges.
