AMAZON • Subsistence Agriculture • Farming for family or village’s needs • Usually takes place in Lesser Developed Countries (LDC) or very rural areas • Slash and Burn Agriculture – type of subsistent agriculture that burns jungles and forest for farmland • Negatives • Deforestation – Removal of large areas of trees – often, not replaced • Soil Erosion – thin layer of soil drains in the Amazon River. It is very difficult to replenish • Loss of habitat
AMAZON • Amazon Rainforest is the largest concentration of trees in the world • Considered the lungs of Earth • Lumber is an important export for Brazil • Those cleared lands often became cattle farms for their beef export to the US • To get the natural resources out of the jungle more easily, Brazil is constructing the TRAN-AMAZONIAN HIGHWAY
TRANS-AMAZONIAN HIGHWAY • 1970 Brazil’s military leader saw the poverty that was in the north east and decided to open the dense unsettle regions to the west • When complete the highway will be 3000 miles long connecting Peru to the Atlantic
