  2. cur • The cur walked down the street with his mangy dog next to him. People got out of his way for the nasty sneer on his face and the way he mumbled such crude comments. • N. a churlish fellow; a worthless dog of low breeding

  3. simpleton • By the time the con-artist hung up the phone, he had sold the simpleton a chair with no legs, an electric spoon, a diesel powered toaster, and a definition free dictionary. • N. A stupid person; a simple-minded person.

  4. mendicant • The mendicant said, “Hey, hey, give me a piece of gum, will ya? Come on, you can spare me a piece of gum. Please, please, please please?” • N. a beggar

  5. squander • He squandered his free period by chucking pennies across the lobby. He could have been doing his vocab homework or researching his paper topic instead. • V. to waste; to spent frivolously

  6. asinine • The asinine child thought it would be a goof idea to roll small boulders into the road. It was fun until the nine-car pileup occurred. • Adj. foolish, inane

  7. unbridled • The unbridled bar fight resulted in a brouhaha that the sheriff couldn’t stop. There was no way to restrain the cowboys and outlaws from smashing bottle overheads and tossing each other over the banister onto fragile tables. • Adj. unrestrained, often violently unrestrained

  8. ragamuffin • The ragamuffin ran down the street. People looked in shock that anyone would let their child get so grubby. • N. an ill-clad, dirty person, esp. a boy

  9. rancorous • The rancorous monster roared in defiance of its captors. It bit the head off a Gamorean guard, then went after the small man in the black flight suit. The cranky monster had some bitterness about being locked in his cave, but did he have to take it out on Luke? • Adj. filled with bitterness or hatred • N. = rancor (bitterness, hatred)

  10. craven • The steam billowed from the cave. The craven knight fled from the monstrous, fire-breathing dragon. After he ran off, the two-foot tall dragon exited his lair. • Adj. cowardly

  11. choleric The volunteer went up to the smiling man and said, “Pardon me, sir, could ye spare a pence for the poor?” The choleric man replied, “Begone or I’ll flay ye like a trout! Go away before I…” • Adj. prone to anger; hot tempered

  12. knave • The knave thought it would be a good idea to pull a prank on the king by putting some dung under the thrown. His neck didn’t appreciate it as it was stretched by a noose. • N. a mischievous person • Knavery = n. mischievousness, the act of being mischievous • Kanvish = adj. mischievous

  13. virulent • The anger towards the Crown grew virulent as it spread through the city. Soon, there would be a rebellion, and blood and death would reach across the realm. • Adj. Malignant; spreading evil and disease; poisonous
