  1. Elements of Poetry Cont. (Yes, you need your book.)

  2. IR Time • You should be reading your IR book or working on your project/book review. • 15 minutes to read • Journal #2 • 2 sentence summary of today’s reading • OR explain what you accomplished on your project/review. • Clear your desk except for a writing utensil.

  3. ISTEP Practice You will quietly read and respond. If you finish before other students, then quietly work on your IR book, project, or review. I SHOULD NOT SEE ANYONE PLAYING GAMES ON THEIR IPAD. We will review answers together.

  4. Get out your literature book pg pg 568 • Literary focus: • Narrative poem – tells a story • Lyric poem – expresses an emotion (The word lyric is Greek. Greeks would sing their songs to the music of a lyre.) • Sonnet – a lyric poem of 14 lines • Let’s read the background. • I will read the poem aloud. • Notice the poem has quatrains (4 lines) • It ends in a couplet (2 lines)

  5. Let’s discuss: Why do you think the mother and grandmother cry as they sing? Notice that each quatrain focuses on a single topic. The couplet sums it all up. 1st and 2nd quatrain’s seem to be on different topics, but they do have a connection. What is it? Our poet uses imagery several times in this poem. Let’s find 4 or 5.

  6. Pg 572 Ode – a poem that pays tribute to someone or something of great importance to the poet. What or who would you write an ode about? Let’s read.

  7. “Ode to Family Photographs” What details let us know that mama was not a very good photographer? This is not just an ode to photographs. What/who else is it praising? Clear your desk for a quiz. Once you have turned your quiz in, then you quietly work on your IR book/project/review.

  8. You need your book! April showers bring May flowers, but what do May flowers bring?

  9. FYI: Now until ISTEP: My blue days (Tuesdays) will be dedicated to ISTEP practice. If there is something specific you need to practice, let me know. That is a GREAT time to work together. A Day only: on an index card, write down any topics on the language arts acuity test that you found difficult or confusing.

  12. A day only: • Test corrections for ½ credit. • You may use your book. • This is a quiet, testing time. • Once you are finished, simply sit quietly while others finish.

  13. A day only: • Speakers in poems. • 5 poems

  14. B Day only Let’s review poems from Friday. You will have a quiz over them in just a few minutes. Clear your desk for a quiz. Once you have turned your quiz in, then you quietly work on your IR book/project/review.

  15. Open book to page 576 We will take turns reading.

  19. Practice with sounds pg 577: With a partner (assigned) read the poem “Jabberwocky” aloud. After you read, create a list of the words that you don’t know what they mean. Work together to come up with the best definition you can for each word. YOU MAY NOT LOOK THEM UP. Actually, some of them are not even real words

Turn to page 578 Exaggeration – aka Hyperbole Rhythm – the musical quality produced through the stressed and unstressed syllables in a poem Meter – the pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables Scanning – marking the stressed and unstressed syllables in a poem End rhyme – at the end of the line Internal rhyme – rhyming within a line Alliteration – repetition of beginning sounds

  22. 2 poems “Father William” What is the rhyme scheme of the first 3 stanzas? PS – Lewis Carroll also wrote . . . “Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout Would Not Take the Garbage Out” Find example of INTERNAL and END ryhme. Find examples of ALLITERATION
