Forces of Change • Technological • Analog to Digital - virtually complete now • Broadband: vaporware in 2006 - reality in 2011 • HDTV – now 3D is coming • DVD revolution - beginning to die already • Regulatory • 1996 Telecommunications Act relaxed restrictions on ownership AND caused a tidal wave of mergers and acquisitions • Global • Domestic markets in U.S. have become saturated • 99% HH – both radio and television • 96% HH – telephone - now Wireless is changing the world • 85% HH – VCR – now DVR has taken over • 68% HH – cable – now Satellite is competing • What percentage of HH have computers? Forces of Change continued • Social • American society is growing older • Latino population fastest growing in U.S. • Internet and computers are dividing us into info-rich and info-poor. • The burdens of war – still in 2006 - what’s next? • Chaos in the Middle East. • Disaster in Japan • Continuing conflict in the Koreas • Terrorism • Our relationship with China • We must rid ourselves of our dependence on crude oil – NOW. Modern Day Theories of Management • Theories X, Y, Z • McGregor (1960) simply relabeled and regrouped theories as seen in practice. • Ouchi (1981) described the unique Japanese approach and called it Theory X.
