  2. 1930: Pluto Was Discovered • Discovered on February 18, 1930 • Discovered by Clyde W. Tombaugh • Officially called a planet on March 13, 1930 • Has three moons • Has a surface temperature of -235 degrees Celsius to -210 degrees Celsius

  4. 1931: Christ The Redeemer Statue is Dedicated to Brazil • Was dedicated on October 21, 1931 • Project was started in 1921 • In Rio de Janeiro, Brazil • Statue was sculpted by Paul Landowski • 98 feet tall • Took five years to construct

  6. 1932: Amelia Earhart Was the First Woman to Fly Solo Across the Atlantic Ocean • Made the famous flight on May 20-21 1932 • Born on July 24, 1897 • Taught to fly by Neta Snook, the first woman to graduate from the Curtiss School of Aviation • Received her pilot’s license in October 1922 • Set many aviation records throughout her career Amelia Earhart!

  8. 1933: The First Concentration Camp, Dachau, is Established • Established in March, 1933 • Located on an old weapon’s factory in Southern Germany • First prisoners were political opponents of the Nazi regime • Liberated on April 29, 1945 • Over 180000 people were killed at Dachau

  10. 1934: MONOPOLY is Created • Was created by Charles Darrow • It was the height of the Great Depression • In MONOPOLY’s first year, it was the number one best-selling game in America • The longest MONOPOLY game lasted 70 days • Is published in 27 languages, not including the Braille edition

  12. 1935: Nuremberg Race Laws Are Instituted • The Nuremberg Race Laws were Instituted on September 15, 1935 • The laws took away Jewish political rights • They also defined Judaism as a race, and not a religion • Had certain guidelines to determine if you were a Jew • Excluded German Jews from German citizenship

  15. 1936: Hoover Dam is Finished • Project authorized in 1928 • Originally called “Boulder Canyon Project” • On boarder of Arizona and Nevada on the Colorado River • Was built to provide electricity to California • 726 feet tall • 1244 feet wide

  17. 1937: The Hindenburg Disaster • Took off on May 3, 1937 from Frankfurt, Germany • Was the first trip between U.S. and Europe of the 1937 season • Had 36 passengers and 61 crew members • Arrival time was pushed back because of a storm • A little flame was seen at the tail of the ship during landing

  20. 1938: Extinct Fish Called A Coelacanth, is Found • Thought to have gone extinct 65 million years ago with dinosaurs • In 1938,Found off the coast of Indonesia by a museum curator • Many scientist believe that the coelacanth represents evolution of fish to four-legged amphibians • Live in depths of 2300 feet • 6.5 feet long 198 pounds • About 1000 left

  22. 1939: The S.S. St. Louis, Jewish Refugee Ship, is Denied Everywhere • The S.S. St. Louis took off on May 13, 1939 • It was to take Jewish refugees to Cuba, where they would wait for entry into the U.S. • When they reached Cuba, they were denied • They traveled to other islands, but were denied everywhere…
