  1. Grand Cultural Tour of ChinaMay 2009 Chinese 390--4 Credits Dragon Core 8: Global Perspective A 21-day study tour for MSUM Students. Also open to MSUM faculty, staff and the general public on a space-available basis

First the Olympics--NOW YOU • Join Professor Gregory Stutes of the economics department and Professor Tai Su-Lin of the languages department on a spring tour of some of the most fascinating historical, cultural, and scenic sites of China. You will learn and experience the rich culture and long history of China through a series of pre-tour lectures and guest presentations in late March, April and early May. The highlight of the class will be a 21-day study tour in China. Lectures and discussions will be held throughout the tour.

  3. Professor Stutes has taught economics at MSUM since 2000. He has explored Chinese culture for several years and has visited both China and Taiwan. Professor Tai has taught Chinese language and culture since 2006. She is a native speaker of Chinese and has been the leader on three study tours including last year’s very successful tour to Taiwan.

  4. Academic Credit: Participants interested in pursuing 4 credits may register for Chinese 390: Cultural Tour of China. These credits may apply toward the East Asia Studies major and minor, in Dragon Core 8—Global Perspectives, and as electives in various programs at MSUM.

  5. Financial Aid may be available to qualified student. Consult with the financial aid officer as soon as possible.

  6. Grand Cultural Tour • Moorhead--March 24 - May 5, 2009 • China--May 20 - June 5, 2009 • Taiwan--June 5 - June 9, 2009

  7. Registration and Deposit Deadline: December 1, 2008A $215 Deposit (non-refundable) should be paid upon enrollment for the tour. Withdrawal from the program must be made in writing. Penalties for withdraw will be applied. Payment Schedule: Following is a payment schedule. Checks should be made out to MSU Moorhead. Tuition and fees are extra.December 1, 2008: Deposit of $215 (nonrefundable) January 19, 2009: $1,200 February 9, 2009: $1,200 March 9, 2009: $1,200 April 6, 2009 $1,200These are projected amounts. Because of the great volatility in the price of oil and the value of the dollar the amount may change or the itinerary may need to be adjusted.

  8. Beijing • May 21 Arrive in China • May 22 Tian'An Men Square, Forbidden City, Summer Palace and Temple of Heaven. A special Peking Duck dinner tonight. • May 23 Great Wall (Mutianyu section) and the Ming Tombs, with the sacred walk. Chinese Kung Fu show tonight following dinner. • May 24 Hutong tour with rickshaw ride and local home visit. Transfer to Beijing Railway Station in the afternoon for express train to Datong.

  9. DATONG • May 25 Yungang Grottoes, Nine-Dragon Wall and Hanging Temple outside Datong. • May 26 Transfer to train station for your train ride back to Beijing. Upon arrival transfer to Beijing Airport for your flight to Xian.

  10. XIAN to LIJIANG • May 27 Full-day tour of the Terra-Cotta Warriors Museum, Banpo Museum, Wild Goose Pagoda, the ancient City Wall, Great Mosque and Muslim quarters. Tonight we will enjoy the Shaanxi Provincial Theater Show & Dumpling Dinner. • May 28 After breakfast, check out and transfer to airport. Depart for Kunming and then connect to Lijiang We will stay at Nan Chun Hotel Lijiang (at old town) Tour of Ancient Dayan Town. This evening enjoy the famous Naxi Minority Orchestra show.

  11. LIJIANG, DALI, and KUNMING • May 29 Full-day tour to visit Dragon Spruce Meadow or Yak Meadow, Snow-capped Yulong Mountain, the Gan Sean, Baishui River, Jade Peak Temple and Baisha Fresco. Visit Black-Dragon Pool. • May 30 Motor coach to Dali. Along the way we will stop by some minority villages for photo-taking and a tour. Tour in Dali including the Three Towers, Lake Erhai and Cang Shan plus the Bai village. • May 31 Motor coach to Kunming and short city tour. Connect flight to Guilin.

  12. GUILIN and SHANGHAI • June 01 Li River Cruise! Few could fail to be enraptured by the beauty of the Li River. • June 02 Morning tour in Guilin; Reed Flute Cave, Elephant Trunk Hill, Folded Brocade Hill and other sights in the city. Flight to Shanghai. Afternoon city tour in Shanghai: the Bund, Yu Yuan Garden.

  13. SHANGHAI and SUZHOU • June 03 Full-day tour: Shanghai Museum, Pudong New development Zone, Nanjing Road and Xin Tian Di area, plus other sights. A well known Shanghai acrobatic show tonight following dinner. • June 04 Transfer to Train Station. Take 50 minute train ride to Suzhou. Take canal boat ride on Grand Canal, tour one or two Chinese Gardens, plus visit to Silk Factory. • June 05 Check out and head for Taipei.

  14. TAIPEI • June 06 Tour of the Night Market during the day. Afternoon tour of National Palace Museum. Evening tour of Shilin Night Market • June 07 Traditional Taiwanese Breakfast. Half day tour of Taipei and the 101 district. Afternoon cultural class. • June 08 CKS Memorial, Zoo, Tea Garden • June 09 Tour of Taonyuan Campus, Flight back to United States!
