  4. Podcasting • Name coined by former MTV host Adam Curry. • Combination of the words “i-pod” and “broadcasting.” • The idea at its roots is a web based radio show that can be accessed at anytime. • All you need to create a podcast is a microphone, computer, and audio editing software.

Email Tips and Safety • Compose message carefully • Keep messages short • Clear and direct messages are helpful to the reader • Humor may be taken the wrong way so be careful when using it or don’t use it • Proofread • Netiquette • SAFE SURFING, CYBER SAFETY FOR KIDS, INTERNET SAFETY FOR CHILDREN

Elementary Reading and Writing Objectives: • Students will use technology to assist in the research of an author study. • Students will use email to make initial contact with author. • Students will use Skype to conduct an interview with author. • Students will use Podcasting to record and present project.

Email Your Author • Choose your author • Browse author’s website to find information about author and author’s email address • Send an initial email requesting an interview • Attach a file containing your interview questions in a follow up email • Set up a time to make the phone interview • Email a thank you to your author when interview is finished

  11. Interview using Skype • Teacher calls author a prearranged time and date • Student conducts interview through conference call • Rest of the students listen to conference call and take notes to help interviewer • Student thanks author for time

  12. Author Podcast • Student creates script for Podcast • Records Podcast and edits audio • Uploads file to web server along with all other podcasts created by our class • Students present podcasts to class through use of Smartboard

Technology in the Elementary Classroom • Objectives: • Students will use Skype to connect with another classroom to discuss various community topics • Students will use email to send messages about projects that can be created about their communities • Students will use podcasting to share their projects as a whole

  14. Classroom Discussions using Skype • Find a classroom through epals to communicate with • Contact them using Skype • Come to a consensus about times of communications using Skype and email • Have students speak with each other concerning events and happening in their communities

  15. Discuss Project using Email • Student email each other to discuss a project to be created comparing and contrasting each others communities • Projects possibilities include newsletter, presentation, or brochure

  16. Podcasting the Final Project • Completion of projects • Rehearsing and preparing for the Podcast is the final step in the unit • The classroom will podcast to each other what their completed projects consists of • Set up equipment • Broadcast final projects

  17. Technology in the Middle School Objectives: • Students will use email to set up an interview with science professionals. • Students will use Skype to contact and conduct the interview. • Students will use Podcasting to share their projects at a state and/or national science fair.

Middle School Social Studies Objectives: • Students will use email to learn about the culture of an Eastern Hemisphere country. • Students will use Skype to conduct a video conference with students from said country. • Students will use Podcasting to share their projects with other classes, administration and school board.

  25. Schedule a Video Conference • Using email, the teachers and students will set up a video conference using Skype. • The student will conduct the video conference at the agreed upon time. • Share the video conference.

Secondary Math Objectives: • Students will complete a project on comparing standard and metric units of measure. • Students will use email to introduce themselves to their partner from Great Britain. • Students will use Skype to keep up ongoing discussions with students in Great Britain. • Students will use Podcasting to present the different sections of their findings.

  28. Emailing Your Partner • Student is assigned a partner • Make initial contact with partner over email • Get to know your partner through a series of emails giving your background • Decide what unit of measure you and your partner will be comparing • Email teacher with your group’s topic

  30. Podcast and Your Partner • Each student creates a podcast with their findings • Podcast is published • Student subscribes to podcast and reads partners perspective • Student will review at least 3 other podcasts from his or her class
