  1. Electronic Knowledge Publishing Adaptive Learning For every person and organisation GKM-EKP Project Konstantin M Golubev General Knowledge Machine Research Group http://gkm-ekp.sf.net

  2. Project goals • Implementation of Adaptive Learning Technology based on the Electronic Knowledge Publishing technology. Just-In-Time Knowledge concept . • May be used in any area including management, business, medicine, arts, ... • Typical terms of development 1 year.

  3. Description Exams: Prof.: You are looking very worried. Any problems with exams questions? Stud.: Oh, no! Questions are OK. It is the answers that I worry about.

  4. Traditional Learning Traditional learning is based on a linear process. Students should learn all proposed knowledge - topic by topic. And they must pass exams to get acknowledgement that knowledge is in their minds. Initial time of learning is very big. There are many tests. But all this work does not guarantee that students have knowledge needed to solve problems of real life.

  5. Adaptive Learning The volume of actual knowledge prevents people from applying it, because even the cleverest people can not learn everything they need. It means that many problems remain unsolved because no one learns needed knowledge. Adaptive Learning is based on a concept called Just-In-Time Knowledge.

  6. Electronic Knowledge Publishing "We are drowning in information but starved for knowledge" John Naisbitt, author of Megatrend

  7. Definitions. Data. Data is everything that could be perceived by humans: text, sound, pictures, multimedia etc. The main task of Information Technologies is data management. Hardware and software are well suited for data capturing and distribution. But who needs this data? If data was collected regardless of people using it - it is senseless.

  8. Definitions. Information Information is part of data which is directly connected to the knowledge possessed by a perceiving person. It means that person can understand and apply it. It is really involved into problems solving. This part is variable depending on the experience of the person - what is valuable for one, may be useless for other.

  9. Definitions. Knowledge Knowledge is a simplified model of certain human intellect which can assist to answer questions like “What is it and how it is called?” and “What we should do in a present situation?” Famous experts in AI Alan Newell and Herbert Simon proposed to define knowledge elements as rules called 'productions' of the type 'If-Situation-Then-Action'.

  10. Definitions. Knowledge Knowledge items are of the following type: 1. Description of a problem* Context data memorized at the time of a problem's solving 2. Name of a problem* Should be unique text 3. Description of a problem solution* The actions needed for a solution verification and application, expected result

  11. The Problem There is great amount of applicable knowledge in the world. Before using it should be learnt. To learn it is the task far beyond possibilities of any person.

  12. Possible Solution GKM-EKP systems can assist during 4 steps of intellectual activity: 1. Observation - getting information about context 2. Producing propositions, based on the knowledge 3. Selection and verification of the most appropriate propositions 4. Memorizing - creation of a new knowledge

  13. Possible Solution With GKM-EKP technology not a bit of initial experts knowledge would be lost and looking for knowledge becomes a matter of minutes. No technology known today including databases, search engines and artificial intelligence are comparable with GKM-EKP in terms of effectiveness and accuracy.

  14. General Knowledge Machine Research Group General Knowledge Machine Research Group is developing GKM-EKP Project since 1986. Now the product is quite stable and may be applied in any knowledge-based area. http://gkm-ekp.sf.net (C) 1999-2010 Konstantin M GolubevGeneral Knowledge Machine Research Group
