Occasional focus groups
5. Subject web pages Key resource in locating subject specific electronic databases
New design of webpages imminent
100’s of staff hours each year dedicated to creation and maintenance
Number of sources had made pages difficult to use
6. Project Objectives Do the pages improve the quality of e-resources that students choose
Do the pages facilitate improved access to, and exploitation of, resources (purchased by the library)
Do the pages influence information-seeking behaviour of students
Provide skills and knowledge of impact assessment which can be re-applied to other areas within Information Services
7. Interview Process Interviews
25 interviews (kept interviewing till “resonance” achieved)
3 rotating interviewers and note takers
No tape recording of interview
Questions based on a template
21 questions asked
Recruited via webpages
Interview lasted between 20-30 minutes
£10 paid to each interviewee
8. Interview analysis Spreadsheet created and organised by question
Every answer entered into spreadsheet
Themes located
Representative comments chosen as examples
Extremely time consuming
9. Statistical analysis
10. Conclusions The library should consider further evaluation tools
Most used section was the ‘Finding Information in Journals’ section.
Changes made to the page design as a result of feedback
General publicity for these pages needs to be increased.
Higher level presence on the redesigned Information Services web pages.
GetRef and WebBridge should be given a high priority
Electronic access to the full text of journals is maintained, and increased if possible.
11. Lessons learnt Easy to underestimate amount of time required for interviews and data analysis
Now wish we had been more ambitious
Qualitative data requires a new mindset
Evaluation of impact can improve perception within institution
Focus resources on key developments and services
12. Questions?
