  3. DISCOVERY! • In 1938, Andre Debierne and Irene Curie, each unaware of what the other was doing, independently asked Marguerite Perey to prepare a sample of highly purified actinium. Irene intended to make an accurate measurement of actinium’s half-life, while Debierne was looking for an elusive new element "neoactinium." Trained in the chemistry of actinium by Marie Curie herself, Perey was perfect for the job. And it was while she was preparing the requested actinium, that Perey discovered the presence of a new short-lived element. Consulting independently with Debierne and Irene, Perey proceeded with the necessary characterizations. This went on for some time with Debierne and Irene each incorrectly assuming that they were Perey’s only coauthor in the discovery. Inevitably, they found out about the other’s involvement and the situation exploded. After a few months, a certain measure of calm returned and a compromise was reached: Perey would be the only official discoverer of the element which she named "francium." André Debierne and Irene Joliot-Curie each preferred no credit for themselves to some credit for the other.

Where can I get some? • Not easily attainable, less than 1oz is suspected to exist at any given time on the planet. • What little portions do exist however are produced from radioactive decay of actinium. • When obtained or isolated the substance only has a half-life of about 21 minutes for FR 238

  5. What is Francium used for? • Francium has no known beneficial uses to humanity. • “it seems unlikely to show up as a food additive at your grocery store anytime soon.”

  6. Element characteristics • INCREDIBLY REACTIVE! • In contrast to many artificial elements (Pu, Np, Tc, Pm et al), francium cannot ever be obtained in weighable amounts due to there being no long-lived isotopes thereof. Hence, all the chemical and physical properties of francium have been studied with extremely low amounts, typically <.000000000000001 g. • Given its position in the Periodic Table, francium is expected to be the most electropositive element, carrying on the procession down the Group 1 line from Li to Cs. Francium exists in just one oxidation state, +1 • Electronegativity = .7 Explosion suppressor
