    3. Fortification of Flour Flame Flour is an important food staple brand and has been present in the PNG diet since pre-1975. Total Consumption per head for Flour is 16.0kg per year. Flour constitutes about 48% of the daily meal. To be true to our Corporate Stand of being a responsible Corporate organization, we commenced fortification of Flour with Thiamin late 2007. Great working relations with UNICEF & Health Officials of the PNG Health Dept. Independent test regimes have been set up, so that claims on vitamin programmes are validated. Marketing campaigns have been implemented to drive the health benefits of the different product variants available. Benefits of Thiamine (Vit. B): Helps body cells convert food into energy through metabolism (chemical reactions). Aids the function of the Heart, Muscles, the Brain and the Nervous System.

    5. Our bakery products are Thiamine fortified. Bread is spontaneously discussed as a breakfast staple. Either bread or an alternate are eaten daily for breakfast in most households. “Most kids they ask for bread for breakfast. You hardly see them asking for bread during lunch hour.” All Mother’s are aware of wholemeal variants and most had tried it.

    6. Mother’s Choice Rice All Rice brought into Papua New Guinea has to be Vitamin enriched (as per legislation) with Thiamine, Iron & Niacin. With rising costs Mother’s Choice Rice gives consumers an affordable alternative and it has grown significantly. Rice constitutes approx 80% of meals in PNG.

This suggests that where consumers can afford a healthy alternative, they will choose it. Their purchasing behaviours unfortunately are influenced greatly by the disposable income.
