  1. The PaD, first longitudinal survey of Catalonia Laia Pineda (Equality Department of the Fundació Jaume Bofill) Laura Puerto (Coordinator of the PaD Survey)

  2. Catalonia? Spain The 17 ‘s Autonomous Communities Catalonia

  3. Understanding how the PaD survey came about The PaD is a subnational panel survey for the study of social structure and inequalities in Catalonia. Characteristics of the context: • Weak tradition is social sciences that exist in southern Europe, from which Catalonia is no exception. • Significant levels of self-government and responsibilities for social policies. • Lack of representativeness of the international and national surveys for the catalan area. Need for Catalonia to acquire powerful tools with which to analyse its social reality.

  4. The main features of the PaD • The scope of the PaD survey is the study of the social structure and inequalities existing in Catalonia • The PaD is the first panel experience in Catalonia and as such involves the acquisition of know-how • The PaD is a survey with a representative sample of the catalan region • The PaD is a survey to be used by the scientific community. The access to the data is free of charge

  5. The main features of the PaD • The PaD aims to exemplify efficiency through a strong emphasis on information technology. • The PaD fieldwork has been carried out internally, in order to have the utmost control over interviewers and data quality. • The purpose of the PaD is two-fold: to gain knowledge of the social reality and to convince the authorities of the need of the survey for guiding political actions.

  6. The PaD survey contents • Opportunities and limitations faced by people living in Catalonia: • finding a job • having a home • reaching the desired level of education • getting healthcare enjoying good health • having enough income to live on • being able to provide care for ones children and family….

  7. The PaD survey contents • Understand much more complex issues: • functional illiteracy • educational failure • the transition between the parental home and one’s own • intermittent and permanent unemployment • temporary employment • dependence on public institutions • hardship • poverty and exclusion…

  8. The future of the PaD • In the near future, the PaD will be managed by a Consortium made up of the Catalan administration, various Catalan universities (including the UPF) and the Fundació Jaume Bofill. • Extending the sample will be possible for the 6th wave of the survey (January 2007), with a sample surpassing 2000 households, and we expect to be able to surpass 5000 households in the near future.

  9. The future of the PaD • Beyond the commitment of the scientific community through their knowledge of the reality and propose specific actions, it requires the involvement of the experts in the public authorities. • Links between its data and many of those gathered across Europe is one of its challenges. We believe that the data on Catalonia can provide highly relevant information for socially characterising Mediterranean Europe.
