  3. Write-On Competition A writing competition through which the three student-edited legal publications at the College of Law select their membership.

  4. Important Dates • Register by April 25 • Problem available for download May 14 at 8 a.m. MST • Submission must be uploaded by May 28 at 11:59 p.m.MST

  5. Write-On Competition • Closed-research, argumentative essay • 15 days to complete, about four days to write a good answer • Blind grading • ALR and AJELP: Bluebook citations in footnotes • AJICL: citations not factored into score • Honor Code applies

AJELP • Publishes articles on current topics in environmental law and policy • Articles published online, alongside: • Comments • Synthesis • Professionally designed new website launching mid-April • “& Policy”: Interdisciplinary • Members, advisers, and authors from UA’s top environmental programs • Innovative rolling publication policy • As soon as we accept an article, we begin work on it immediately and publish it as soon as possible – very attractive to authors writing about time sensitive issues • Five 2L Board Positions

  19. AJELP 2L Responsibilities • Support the publication’s editing functions • Copywork • Galleyproofing • Publish a Comment • A short (4-8 page) academic piece investigating a cutting-edge environmental topic • Synthesis • Research topics of your interest • 1 Credit

  20. AJELP 3L Responsibilities • Associate Editors • Copywork • Galleyproofing • Article selection • 1 credit • Editorial Board • Run the show • Oversee the article selection & editing process • Entrepreneurial opportunities in web & marketing • Grade the Write-On Competition • 3 credits

  21. AJELP Benefits • Guaranteed citable publication 2L year • E.g., Mike Malfettone, A Nation Fractured: Drilling into the Debate over Fracking, 2 Ariz. J. Envtl. L. & Pol’y 1039 (2012) • No note requirement but Member Publication Policy • Write a 20-30 page substantial paper, overseen by a distinguished professor in your particular field of study (environmental or not), and receive 3 graded credits • Submit your environmentally related substantial paper for high chance of publication in AJELP • Less copywork, more time to research topics that interest you (Synthesis, Comment) • La Casita – great work space, open 24/7/365 • Snacks, foosball, bike rack, environmental library

  22. AJICL • Publishes articles on a wide variety of international and comparative law topics • Goal of providing a forum for debate on current issues affecting international legal development • 3 issues per year, with one or more being symposium issues • 3L Board with 2L committees

AJICL • 2L Responsibilities • Write a 50 page note of publishable quality with guidance support from 3L Board and faculty advisor • Participate in the production process by copyworking and galleyproofing articles • Write-On grading to assist in selecting the following year’s writers • Committee participation is optional, but encouraged • 3 Academic Credits

AJICL • 3L Responsibilities • Copyworking and Galleyproofing if NOT on the Board • Board Positions • Guide 2L Writers through the note writing process • Select and edit articles for publication • Oversee continued success of the Journal • 1 academic credit for 3L Writers • 3 academic credits for Board Members

  25. Arizona Law Review • Publishes general interest articles • 4 issues per year • Articles • Student Notes • Law & Policy Notes • Syllabus Blog • Five 2L Board positions

ALR 2L Responsibilities • Write 60-Page Note of “publishable quality” • Guidance from 3L Editor and faculty advisor • Meets College of Law’s substantial paper requirement • Support the publication’s editing functions • Copywork • Galleyproofing • Select Articles for following year’s issues • 3 credits

  27. ALR 3L Responsibilities • Staff Writers • Copywork • Galleyproofing • Article selection • 1 credit • Editorial Board • Oversee the publication process • Oversee the Note process • Grading the Write-On Competition • 3 credits
