Location
  • The tribes of the Northwest Coast lived in the forests close to the sea.
  • They hunted in the forests and fished in the oceans and rivers.
  • The Northwest climate is cool and wet, so the growing season is short. For this reason, the Northwest tribes hunted, fished, and gathered plants from the forests for most of their food.

  • The Chinooks and the Makahs were two tribes that lived along Northwest Coast of North America.
  • Chief Comcomly was a Chinook chief that welcomed Lewis and Clark at the end of their expedition.
  • The Chinook Indians lived at the mouth of the Columbia River.

  • Some tribes of the Northwest made rows of long houses they built with wood from the forests.
  • Their houses had no windows.
  • They made their houses for six related families, or clans.

  • The Makahs were whale hunters.
  • They ate whale meat and skin.
  • The Makahs also ate plenty of fish, especially salmon.
  • The Chinooks’ ate many kinds of fish too. Salmon was also a big part of their diet.
  • Both the Makahs and the Chinooks smoked fish and game to eat during the winter.
