  1. CELLS

  2. TSW…discuss the needs of living organisms. • What are the needs of living organisms? • Small team discussions • One volunteer to record ideas for team • Focus, respect, and cooperation • 5 minutes…

  3. What are the needs of living organisms? ALL living organisms require the following needs: • Water • Food • Gas exchange (oxygen and carbon dioxide) • Waste disposal

  4. Amoeba: a single-celled organism • cell membrane surrounds the cell like skin • liquid cytoplasm fills the cell (mostly water)

  5. Single-celled organisms… • … live their whole lives surrounded by water. • … get the water they need to live from the water around them. • … use gases dissolved in the water. • … eliminate their waste into the water around them. • … get everything they need for life directly from their watery environment.

  6. Elodea(leaf): multicellular organism • each cell looks like a brick • cell membrane surrounds the cell • liquid cytoplasm fills the cell • green chloroplasts contain chlorophyll

  7. Muscle cell: multicellular organism

  8. Multicellular organisms • Humans are multicellular organisms. • We don’t live IN water. • We are made of trillions of cells. • Most of the cells are deep inside our muscles, organs, and bones. • EVERY CELL IS ALIVE. • Meaning, every cell is receiving the resources (all 4) it needs to survive.

  9. How do human cells… • … get the things they need to survive? • … get food? • … get water? • … get oxygen? • … get rid of waste? 5 minutes to discuss Secretary record responses

  10. HOMEWORK • WRITE A SUMMARY OF NOTES TAKEN IN CLASS • WRITTEN IN YOUR OWN WORDS…NOT TO BE COPIED FROM WORDS ALREADY RECORDED IN YOUR NOTES • DRAW A LINE AT BOTTOM OF NOTES AND PUT A TITLE FOR “SUMMARY”
