  8. Getting Ready! Obtain copy of teacher’s daily schedule Plan for 2 hours to complete your observation Plan to observe one teacher-directed and one child-directed activity Email teacher and advise of time you will arrive and activities you need to observe Arrange a time when you can interview the teacher in private(about 10-15mins)

  9. Sample Email Hi Ms Apple, I am so looking forward to us teaming together and getting the opportunity to assist you in whatever ways possible as you implement the Teaching Pyramid Model. I would like to set up a day next week to come and observe in your classroom. I will need to watch a teacher-directed activity (circle time or story time) and a child-directed activity (centers or free play) and then get together for a brief meeting (10-15mins). I could come in the morning at 8:15 when circle time starts and then we can meet at 11:45 during the scheduled nap, if that sounds good. Please let me know if you have a preference for day of the week. Thanks so much, Denise

  10. Before You Begin! • Identify the lead teacher • Ask the teacher if there are children present who have severe language delays or are English Language Learners • Document on front page of TPOT • Complete all information on the front page

  11. Run TPOT RUN!! • Do a thorough review of the TPOT Manual before you go out to observe • Take lots of notes • Do not try to score in the classroom • Score as soon as you get back to your office • Once you feel more comfortable with the instrument you can try to score during the observation

  12. Interviews • Items 19-22 are scored strictly based on teacher interview • Write key words that will help you remember responses • Ask questions as they are worded • Give additional prompts if needed

  13. Questions on specific indicators?

  14. Scoring the TPOT • Score as soon as you are done with your observation • Score on your paper copy first • Input results into your Excel Spreadsheet • Share graphs with teacher/teams

  15. Specific Scores • For Item 14, you must first decide if there was an occurrence of problem behavior during your observation • For items 16-18, if you observe a behavior that conflicts with the teacher’s report, base your score on the observation • Then mark if your score is based on observation or report

  16. Review Excel

  17. Where to start • Set goals around areas of need based on TPOT spreadsheet • Think about simple strategies that if implemented will make the biggest impact • Have a plan for getting necessary resources for implementing those strategies

  18. Things to Remember • TPOT is meant to be a professional development tool • Action Plan based on areas of need as determined by your TPOT • Complete a minimum of two formal TPOTs • Pre • Post

  19. Data Driven Coaching for Pyramid Implementation • Teaching Pyramid Observation Tool • The Pyramid Infant Toddler Observation Scale

  20. Next Session – October 21 • The coaching process • Navigating coaching challenges • Be in front of a computer on which you can watch videos that you will download ahead of time
