  2. SUN The Sun is not a planet, it is an average size star located in the center of the solar system. The ancient Greeks believed that everyday, Apollo, the god of the sun, would ride a chariot across the sky pulling the Sun behind him. The Sun is 110 times wider than Earth, it is so large that it makes up 99.86% of the solar systems mass. Because of the Suns huge influence on Earth many cultures saw the Sun as a deity or a god. The Sun is important because it heats up the Earth so it will not freeze, it also provides light and gives vegetation to food. The diameter of the Sun is 870,000 miles and the average surface temperature is 9,900 Degrees Fahrenheit. We are 93 million miles from the sun , with a space craft that has proper shielding we can within 30 million miles of the Sun. The Sun is so dangerous that our skin can easily burn within 20 minutes of being outside.

It is said to have 167 volcanoes. 6. Aside from planet Earth , Venus is the most explored planet.

Mars has a small mountain named Olympus Mons, a small extinct volcano. 4. The surface of Mars is covered in canyons and valley’s, which lead scientist to believe there once was water on Mars.

  7. ASTEROID BELT An Asteroid belt is a belt of small, widely-scattered asteroids between Mars and Jupiter, where the material never formed a single planet. The asteroid belt separates the inner and outer planets. An asteroid belt can only be seen through a telescope. Sometimes asteroids collide and fragments are knocked into other orbits. Asteroids have hit Earth several times. Since ¾ of the Earth is covered by water most Asteroids land in the ocean. The average size of an asteroid is no bigger than a house, although there are millions the size of football fields and the smallest ones are the size of a bolder.

In 1979 Jupiter was the 3rd planet to be discovered to have the ring system. 2. Jupiter has the fastest rotation of any planet. 3. The red spots located on Jupiter are actually from a storm that lasted over 300 years. 4. Jupiter is slowly shrinking due to its excessive gravity. 5. Jupiter is 11 Earth’s wide.

Saturn’s rings are made of “water ice” mixed with dust and other chemicals. 2. The day of the week Saturday, is named after Saturn. 3. Saturn has 7 major rings. 4. Saturn is so large that it can hold 59 Earth’s in it.

Uranus is named after the Greek God of the Sky. 2. A year on Uranus is equal to 84.01 Earth years 3. Uranus was discovered in 1781 by William Herschel. 4. Uranus is considered unusual because it is tipped on its side.

Neptune was the very first planet to be discovered using mathematics rather than observation. 2. Neptune is not capable of being seen by the naked eye. 3. Neptune is very windy, winds have blown approximatley 1,200 miles per hour.

  12. COMET Comets are known as “dirty snowballs” small bodies of ice leftovers from the formation of the solar system about 4.6 billion years ago. Ancient Greeks believed comets were stars with flowing hair behind it. In 240 B.C the Chinese began documenting the appearance of Haley’s Comet. Comets do not live very long once they enter the warmer parts of the solar system. No one really knows how long a comet can last, it depends on its original size and how close it travels near the Sun or Jupiter.

  13. METEOR A meteor sometimes called a falling star is a streak of light from a meteoroid that enters the Earths surface that flashes through the sky travelling 25,000 to 160,000 miles per hour. Meteors are pieces of rock, some are small and some are big. Many of them come from the asteroid belt. A meteor shower is when something hits a huge rock, and then little rocks form, and come to earth or stay in space, and make shooting stars in the sky.

The moon was created when a rock the size of Mars slammed into Earth 2. The Moon is the size of Australia. 3. The Moon controls the tidal waves. 4. The Moon moves away from Earth one inch per year.
