Introducing…Charles Darwin! • Born on February 12 • Grew in Shrewsbury • Married his cousin, Emma Wedgwood • Died on April 19, 1882 • Buried in Westminster, Abbey • Had 10 children with Emma: • William (1839-1914), Anne (1841-1851), Mary (Sept. 23, 1842 died at 3 weeks old), Henrietta (1843-1930), Sir George (1845-1912), Elizabeth (1847-1926), Sir Francis (1848-1925), Leonard (1850-1943), Sir Horace (1851-1928), Charles (1856-1858),

  3. Charles Darwin contributed to evolution. He was the only naturalist that showed proof organism’s evolve over time. This really helped scientists understand the past, and what animals may evolve to in the future. He also discovered how animals, like finches from the Galapagos islands, look similar but have different body features, for which island they live on. When Charles visited the islands, he saw a different species of finch, but they had the same markings, just different sizes. With discovering evolution, scientists get a feel of what particular animals will look like in the future, or what they looked like in the past. It could also help scientists learn about what specific animals will grow which adaptations over time, and how they evolve due to climate change.

  4. Charles mother died when he was 8 years old. He doesn’t remember much due to the fact she got very ill after his youngest sisters birth. • Charles was an experienced hunter at the age of 9. He hunted in Shrewsbury. When killing his first animal, a snipe, he actually trembled with excitement so badly, that he had almost couldn’t reload his gun, his hands shaking so badly. He hunted things like deer, birds, and foxes. • Family is: (Brothers and sisters) Marianne (1798), Caroline (1800), Susan (1803) Erasmus (1804). Father was Robert Darwin, mother was Susannah Darwin.

Charles was pulled out of school at 16 and sent to medical school by his father, because he wanted him to be a surgeon. • Charles read his grandfather’s book, Zoonomia, which was his theory of evolution. After reading, he began to develop his own theory. • Charles went to Christ’s College in Cambridge in 1828. He still hunted, and captured beetles whenever he could. He was quiet, and always lost in his own thoughts,

Charles set out on an expedition at age 22 in 1831 on the Welsh countryside in search of fossils with Adam Sedgwick. • Robert FitzRoy asked Charles to go with him on a journey around the southern and western costs of South America on his ship, the HMS Beagle. This trip was orgiginally planned to take 3 years. Charles was asked to go to document minerals, plants, and animals. Originally. Charles was asked to go to keep FitzRoy company. • Charles asked his cousin, Emma Wedgewood, to marry him on the 11th of November in 1838.
