Development? • Measure of a state’s advancement upon a continwm. • What is the continuum? • HDI – Human Development Index • Measure of Economic, Social, and Demographic factors • Economic – GDP • Social – Education and Literacy Rate • Demographic – Life Expectancy
The only way to measure? • No. HDI was created by the U.N. as a method of assessing development. • Other variables also affect our understanding of development: • Economic: Types of jobs, productivity, raw material (production and use of), and consumer goods (selling/buying of) • Social: Education (including number of years, amount of reading/reading materials), health and welfare • Demographic: Life expectancy, infant mortality rate, natural increase rate, and crude birth rate
Why not use all measurements? • For the most part, the initial indicators in HDI will be mimicked by the other indicators. • I.E. Higher GDP is typical in MDC’s, which have tertiary sector fields, high productivity, use raw material to produce goods, and consume more “consumer goods.” • Lower GDP typically means primary or secondary sector fields, low productivity, exporting of raw materials, and low consumption of “consumer goods.”
