THE CARBON CYCLE HOW DOES CARBON DIOXIDE MOVE THROUGH THE EARTH, OCEANS AND AIR?
Where is CO2 on Earth? • Carbon is stored on our planet in the following major pools: • as organic molecules in living and dead organisms found in the biosphere; • as the gas carbon dioxide in the atmosphere; • as organic matter in soils; • in the lithosphere as fossil fuels and sedimentary rock deposits such as limestone, dolomite and chalk; • in the oceans as dissolved atmospheric carbon dioxide and as calcium carbonate shells in marine organisms.

The BIG Picture: • Photosynthesis • Cellular Respiration • The Role of Oceans • Formation of Fossil Fuels
Photosynthesis 6 CO2 + 6 H2O + Energy C6H12O6 + 6O2
Cellular Respiration C6H12O6 + 6O2 6 CO2 + 6 H2O + Energy
Combustion • Fossil fuels – form from the remains of plant and animals. • The basic equation for all combustion reactions: • Carbon-based fuel + O2 Energy + Water + CO2
