Literature Review • Problem we wanted to address: • Nutrition and/or hydration concerns amongst low-income inner-city youth on the Chelsea Boys and Girls Club Swim Team • What current literature says: • Intervening at a younger age is effective in bringing healthy habits into adulthood • Barriers urban low-income families face include lack of access to healthy foods, lack of knowledge about healthy foods, lack of time to prepare foods, and the easy accessibility of fast food and convenience foods • Parents receive much of their information about food and nutrition through the popular media • Getting students involved in the intervention is an important aspect

Needs Assessment Goals and Objectives • The goal of our needs assessment was to find out the nutritional problem, if any, facing the members of the Boys and Girls Club swim team located in Chelsea, Massachusetts. We intended to learn, via interviews key informants, whether there is a need for a nutrition intervention amongst the youth on the swim team. • The objectives of our needs assessment were to: • Determine what barriers, if any, the swim team has to healthy eating pre- and post-swim workouts. • Determine what knowledge, if any, the swim team currently has about healthy eating, healthy snacking, and sports nutrition in general. • Determine what motivators, if any, the swim team might have to wanting to learn about healthy eating. • Perform a review of the literature in order to assess the successes and failures of past nutrition interventions that have been done on urban teens in regards to healthy eating.

Key Informant Interview Results • Jennifer Spina, RN • There are a total of 10 Boys and Girls Clubs in Boston, 7 are freestanding with pools • Jennifer serves as the sole health administrator for the area clubs • Develops Policy and Programming • Provides health education • Does outreach and advocacy for the clubs • In 2011 an initiative was implemented with the goal that all graduating members would know how to swim • Freestanding clubs already had swim programs and swim teams • Coaches had asked Jennifer to provide nutritional education to parents • Traverse Robinette, Aquatics Director at Chelsea Boys and Girls Club of Boston • Swim team has official meets between November and January, training is year round • Including post season meets, and "fun" activities such as scuba and snorkeling which are earned privileges • Team made up of about 50 kids ages 6-16, divided into two age groups: 6-10 and 11-16 • Has noticed unhealthy snacking and lack of hydration awareness among kids • Believes material for kids and parents would be helpful • Willing to provide time and space to educate the kids • Works with two college age lifeguards

Boys and Girls Club Chelsea • Mission Statement: • “Our mission is to help young people, especially those who need us most, build strong character and realize their full potential as responsible citizens and leaders.” • Who they serve? • Annually over 1,900 youth ages 6 to 18. • Endorses healthy choices by youth community members in: • Recreation and fitness • Education • Mentoring and group talks.

Survey Results • 21 question survey • 36 members completed ages 6 to 16 • We divided our age group into two categories • Ages 6-10 • Ages 11-16 • 3 major questions pulled to address in the intervention • 1. What did you have to eat before practice tonight? • 2. Do you bring a drink to practice? • 3. Do you feel tired after practice?

  13. Other Important Results • What is your favorite snack? What is your favorite dinner? • Needed a follow up question • Do you participate in any activities other than swimming during the week? • 62%, or 23 members said YES

  14. Program Goal • Our program’s overarching goal is to increase the swimmer’s knowledge about healthy snacking before and after swim practice. Our hope is that this knowledge will lead to behavior change in the long-term and help to increase their energy and performance both in and out of the pool.

  15. Program Objectives • Decrease the percentage of kids who report being tired after practice from 57% to 40%. • Increase the percentage of kids who bring a drink to practice from 58% to 75%. • Have 65% of the swimmers respond that they chose a healthy snack before practice.

  16. Sink or Swim 1 2 3 4 5 • For ages 6-10 • Objective is to learn which foods will help their team swim faster • Winner is the first to make it five spaces to the finish line.

New Balance Foundation • Mission is to support charitable organizations whose humanitarian efforts work for the betterment of children and communities that focuses on the prevention of childhood obesity. • Donates $6.5 million a year to organizations in Boston and 3 towns in Maine. • Past recipients include • Boston Children’s Hospital: The New Balance Foundation Center for Childhood Obesity Prevention, Clinical Research and Care • Girls on the Run • Tufts University Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy: "Children in Balance”

  22. Evaluation • 1. Attendance at the game night, as well as participation and engagement in the game. • Nutrition staff will take attendance, and take notes on engagement, and questions asked by participants. • 2. A survey/quiz 1-week post game night • Evaluating the kids to judge whether or not they learned information based on the goals of the intervention and thoughts of the intervention. Questions include: What did you like most about the intervention, what was one thing you learned, and what didn’t you like about the intervention? • 3. A survey 2-months post game night to judge whether or not the kids made any behavior changes based on what they learned. • The kids will be given the same survey questions to evaluate any behavior changes based on the intervention game. Additional questions will be asked relating to information taught and use of incentives. Questions include: Have you brought the water bottle to swim practice?, how many days a week do you eat breakfast?, What did you eat before practice? How do you feel tired before practice?
