Addressing Lightning Damage in Home Networks: Insights from Recent Research

As home networks (HNs) expand rapidly, the assumption that connections to Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) are safe from lightning strikes has proven misleading. Recent incidents in Japan and the US highlight significant risks of surge damage to HN equipment. This technical session, prepared by Working Party 1, will explore the findings of investigations, including those by NTT Japan, which focuses on the surge-induced damage to internal interfaces. The session includes four informative presentations addressing this pressing issue and potential mitigation strategies.

  2. Introduction • Home Networks (HNs) are growing at a fast rate. • There is an expectation that HNWs connected to an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) will be safe from lightning. • This is not the case as damage is occurring in Japan and the US. Technical Session - Home Networks - Geneva

Introduction • This Technical session has been prepared to provide information on the work being done within Working Party 1 on the lightning damage problems experienced with HN equipment. • NTT, Japan, is investigating damage to internal interfaces caused by surges on the mains.
