Emergency Lighting James Beresford BEng MIET Emergency lighting product marketing manager
Why Emergency lighting • Provides a safer environment for building occupants • Emergency lighting is a mandatory requirement for any commercial or residential premises • Heavily governed and defined by product, application and installation legislation/standards
BS5266-1:2011 Clearly identify the escape route!
Points of emphasis At each exit door intended to be used in an emergency
Points of emphasis Near stairs so each tread receives direct light, and near any other level change
Points of emphasis Near safety signs
Points of emphasis At each change of direction and at intersections of corridors
Points of emphasis Near each first aid post illumination
Points of emphasis Outside and near to each final exit
BS5266-1:2011 Illuminate the escape route!
Escape Route • 1 Lux on the centreline • Uniformity ratio no less than 40:1 =>1 Lux
Open area (anti-panic) • Areas greater than 60m2 require 0.5 lux with 0.5m border => 0.5 Lux 0.5m Border
Is it enough • “I have an emergency lighting system” – Is that enough??
BS5266-1:2011 (Annex D) Illuminate specific tasks!
Specific tasks • Fire alarm control/indication equipment, reception areas & panic bar / pads
Specific tasks • Plant rooms
Specific tasks • Refuges
Specific tasks • First aid rooms, Treatment rooms
Specific tasks • Kitchen's
Be careful • Only the specific task needs to be illuminated • Varying light levels required (BS5266-1:2011 Annexe D)
Is the product suitable • CE is ½ way there • CE mark confirms compliance from a safety aspect • Self declaration • Does not cover functional operation (Does the product fulfil its desired purpose?)
Authenticated data – ICEL & BSI • Proof of component quality • Proof of all performance claims • Light output • Independent test of distribution • IP rating • Proof of safety and reliability • Proof of consistent product quality.
Emergency lighting is a ‘grudge buy’ nobody wants it, it’s a legal obligation
Regulatory compliance has no commercial benefit but the consequences do!
