The ConnectionBetween Music and Government, Brett Migliore. La Costa Canyon Senior Project, 2011. P.3, Cartwright
About my Internship • Bilbray’s office is on Stevens in Solana Beach, CA • I preformed simple tasks from filing, shredding documents, and delivering paperwork to difficult work such as explaining the Congressman’s position on specific topics to concerned callers. • I listened in on meetings between workers and the Congressman as they discussed strategies and propositions.
The Research- Where did all the music go? • San Diego County alone has lost over 10,000 middle school – high school music students in the past decade. It is expected that (at this rate), music education will no longer be in San Diego public schools by the year 2040. • Every state (excluding Alaska, which has placed more funding into education) has consistently cut their education budget in the past decade. In doing so, hundreds of elective courses that students take are no longer available. Usually, the first program to go is music education. The No Child Left Behind Act has improved test scores in math and English across America but it takes more from the schools than one would expect. When a school does not preform well funding for the sports and the arts are syphoned only towards the core school subjects. This leaves all other classes little to no funding and consequently will no longer exist.
Teaching High School I hope to teach music education as well as United States government classes at a high school after college (Arizona State). My internship with the Congressman and my research on music education has better prepared me for my future in public school teaching. I understand the difficulties in keeping music as part of our education system. I also have a better grasp on what exactly happens in the local government offices and how our small government district communicates it’s difficulties with the federal government so that our area is represented in Washington. With this knowledge, I can help students better understand our legislature and I am now more aware of the struggle I must go through in order to keep music in our schools.
Le Fin. Thank you for listening to my presentation. :D -Brett Migliore
