  3. Objectives • To recognize phrases in sentences • To distinguish between adjective and adverb phrases • To understand and recognize verbals, including participles and infinitives

  4. Review • Please give 10 examples of common pronouns • Please give 5 examples of compound pronouns • Please give 3 examples of set expressions

  5. Prepositional Phrases A phrase is a group of words that functions as a single part of speech. Phrases DO NOT contain a subject and a verb. • Contains: a preposition AND a noun/pronoun • The noun/pronoun is the object of the preposition • The book is between the pen and the pencil. • May act as an adjective • Modifies a noun by telling what kind? which one? • Usually comes after the noun • The car with four doors broke down on the highway. • May act as an adverb • Modifies a verb, an adjective or an adverb by showing where? when? in what way? to what extent? • Before class, you must put your homework on the desk.

Speaking Practice • Everyone stands up • When you are ready raise your hand • When it is your turn please give a sentence with a prepositional phrase • The book, on the floor, is not my book. • If you are correct you may sit down • If you can not think of anything, make something up… it is okay^^

  7. Appositive Phrases • Always a noun or pronoun • Always identifies a noun or pronoun • Always follows the noun or pronoun it identifies • The car, a Ford, is sixteen years old.

  8. Speaking Practice • Everyone stands up • When you are ready raise your hand • When it is your turn please give a sentence with an appositive phrase • My mother, a nurse, is on vacation. • If you are correct you may sit down • If you can not think of anything, make something up… it is okay^^

Homework • Use your smartphones to take 10 pictures • Pictures must be appropriate for school • E-mail teacher the picture • beccateacher.tis@gmail.com • Include your name and section, in order to receive credit • Include a caption, a sentence that explains the picture • 5 with a prepositional phrase • 5 with an appositive phrase • The pictures will be put on the Weebly
