  1. Scientific Management Committee Meeting Geneva, Switzerland,1-2 February 2017

  2. 1. Opening, agenda, minutes • Opening (Mironov) • Agenda (Mironov) • Minutes: Massimo Milelli and Chiara Marsigli (day 1), Christoph Schraff (day 2) • Minutes of the last SMC teleconference 14 December 2016 and of the last SMC meeting 8-9 September 2016 were distributed by Michal Ziemianski

  3. See separate file …(ToDo list) 2. SMC ToDo list

  4. DWD and MeteoSwiss provided (since 2016) output from their COSMO-DE-EPS and COSMO-1-EPS, respectively. LPI (Lightning Potential Index) is a new COSMO-DE product provided to ESSL (since 2016). Overall Performance of COSMO model is satisfactory (particularly over Alps), no systematic differences between ca. 1km and ca. 2 km mesh size. “Upscaled probability” is the favourable probabilistic product (esp. for extreme events forecast), “maximum of all members” is found misleading (requires caution). Time scale of predictability differs with event. LPI fares well (does what is expected), the added value depends on forecaster and the end-user demand (still hard to assess with certainty, more cases needed). 3. ESSL Testbed 2016 report (Mironov, Blahak)

  5. Problems: underestimation of storm coverage and initiation in warm, high CAPE environment (weak synoptic forcing); occasionally, too cool cold pools; for some events, predictions (EPS) are poor independent of lead time (e.g. no storm initiation at all). Outlook: New product are expected in 2017 (decision is pending): updraft helicity track, vertically integrated specific mass of hydrometeors, etc. (mainly storm track products); implementation into COSMO is underway (must be done on the flight, no post-processing possible, c/o Ulrich Blahak). Eventually, “really bad cases” may be rerun by COSMO folks to find out the cause of trouble (who does the work?). For further details, please contact Ulrich.Blahak [at] dwd.de. 3. ESSL Testbed 2016 report (cont’d)
