  1. What does AEC stands for and how is it used in writing a paragraph?

  2. How does O. Henry use characterization in Hearts and Hands? Question

  3. Sample AEC Paragraph Topic Sentence O. Henry uses indirect characterization in depicting Miss Fairchild in “Hearts and Hands.” The text claims,“When she spoke her voice, full, sweet, and deliberate, proclaimed that its owner was accustomed to speak and be heard.” Here, the reader can infer that Miss Fairchild is respected since she is used to being listened to when she speaks. Perhaps this could also mean Miss Fairchild is interesting and/or intelligent since people take notice when she talks. Evidence/Details Commentary

  4. Sample AEC Paragraph (Continued) Furthermore, in the short story Miss Fairchild is described as “a very pretty young woman dressed in elegant taste.” The author chooses to provide the detail that her attire is “elegant.” This small detail leaves the reader to believe that Miss Fairchild could potentially be wealthy since she is dressed so tastefully. Typically one in “elegant” apparel usually has a higher social status and is affluent. Evidently, O. Henry delivers several details about Miss Fairchild which help the reader discern what type of character she is. Evidence/Details Commentary
